Harper's Plan Welcome, But Don't Bet on It

By Ben Meisner

When Stephen Harper announced that if the Conservatives formed the next Federal Government, his party would pump $ 1 billion dollars into the Pine Beetle problem, he was preaching to the converted.

D ick Harris and Jay Hill, both Conservative members, have no fear from any Liberals in this region of BC.  As a matter of fact, the Conservatives have very little problem outside of Vancouver in this province.

The problem is much larger and until the people of the 416 and the 905 realize that they have been smoked by the Liberals time and time again, there will be a Liberal government.

We are heading into another election come next spring and the betting bucks should be placed on a minority Liberal government again.

When Parliament returns, there will be a huge spending spree for those people in the 905 and the 416, bearing in mind that the GST from this new gas windfall is heading straight into the coffers in Ottawa.

We may be being hosed in the west where the fossil fuels originate, but head to the 905 and you’ll find that the prices are always much lower.

So the Liberals will set about to buy up the vote in the city of Toronto with 42 seats and the 905 to the south and once again the party will be over before the sun sets in BC .

We may have a legitimate complaint, but trying to receive a fair share of confederation simply isn’t in the cards.

Until we pull a Quebec and threaten to leave confederation, the wants of the west will remain far down the list of priorities in Canadian politics.

I’m Meisner, and thatis one man’s opinion.

And Meisner is "right on" the money.
We have to seriously talk separation-and mean it.
Maybe they will then realize we do contibute more than our share to the G N P and have done so-like forever!!!!
We should be ready to end our generosity, call it quits, and prepare to "go it alone."
We can do it--you just bet your ticker tape--we can do it!!!
And we must!!
I'm not with you on this one Ben. I think the west has a bunch of dreamers if they are thinking about triple E and seperation.
We are after all in a Federation part of a democratic society so why these foolish notions. We support such airy fairy political parties like the reform now the conservatives. We are getting what we deserve. Seems we will always be hewers of wood and carriers of water that think the only way we can survive is throught the abundance of our narural resources.
the fact that we elect conservatives consistently in our ridings proves yet again how dim witted the people of this region truly are. how do we expect to get anything out of the feds when we don't konw how to ever pick a winning side. heck even gordie down in victoria even throws the odd bone to the ol heartlands.

later.........
I think the word seperation is a harsh term. I think a better way of saying it is that we need Northern BC provincial 'independence'.

In other words Northern BC should be looking at becoming its own province possibly with the Yukon on board. It is at the provincial level where resource royalties and taxation is authorized.

78% of the BC budget is a result of the resource industry, half of that in the North for 40% of BC government revenue with 10% of the provicnical population.

The opposite trend is true when it comes to provincial expenditures.

Therefore an 'independent' North with equal rights to the other provinces of Canada could open up negotiations on the federal level as to the role of the Senate in a Canadian confederation of equal and independent provinces under one flag.

Time Will Tell
We already are an independent economic area. We have a City Council a Regional district, school boards hospital boards and you name it we have it. Yet we have a Mayor that needs to be replaced and it appears he will probably be relected.
Just look at the take that Ben Meisner gave us on our elected officials at City Hall in his statement that he would not run for Mayor.
There appears to be no bond in our society today. Its everyone for themselves and the devil for them all if I may use an old well worn Cliche. This give our politicians the opportunity to put it in our ear if they so choose. Untill we get serious and tell our politicians what needs to be done we will be led down the garden path. The sale of BC Rail and now Terasen and is BC Hydro next. This should tell us that our system is flawed and needs a new direction. If we dont move our freinds to the South will be happy to have all our resources.
We need to get out of the box and start our own diversification of industry rather then thinking our Governments need to do it for us.
Now tell me why would we form another bureaucracy to try and solve our political problems?
Heads up--out of the sand--good???
Butts in-not exposed for kicking-good???
Back to the wall--ready to come out fighting-good?
Everyone for separation??
Is Ottawa paying attention?? NO-not good!!!
Oh well!!!
Head back in the sand???
Butt exposed???
Back to square one??
Yep-we are canadians!!!!
