Mackenzie to Develop Spirit Square
By 250 News
The town of Mackenzie has been given a grant from the province to develop its own "Spirit Square".
Mackenzie gets just under $344 thousand dollars to develop a central location for community celebrations. The design will ensure it can be used year 'round. The proposed site for the Mackenzie Spirit Square is currently underused green space in the area of the rec centre, museum, arts centre and high school.
Mackenzie Mayor Stephanie Killam says the Square will be the focal point of celebrations including the province's sesquicentennial in 2008 and the Northern B.C. Winter Games "The Mackenzie Spirit Square will certainly be showcased at the upcoming 2009 Northern BC Winter Games which Mackenzie is proud to be the host community. We look forward to working with the province to make this dream a reality."
The Province announced the "Spirit Square " funding program as a legacy of the sesquicentennial celebrations. The Province will donate up to $500 thousand dollars on a 50-50 cost sharing basis with the local government.
