Campfire Safety Urged on Long Weekend

Heading into the long weekend, the Ministry of Forests and Range is sending out a notice that it will be stepping up patrols and making sure campfires are small, and safely contained.
More than half the wildfires in B.C. are caused by human activity. Last B.C. Day long weekend, 29 fires were started by humans.
Prince George Fire Centre firefighters have responded to four spot fires since Monday, July 30; three are out and one is under patrol. Their cause is under investigation.
Since April 1, of this year, 233 fires have been reported to the Prince George Fire Centre, with 144 caused by lightning and 89 by human activity.
The fire danger rating is low to moderate through most of the Prince George Fire Centre, with Robson Valley in high. The forecast for the long weekend calls for showers and thundershowers for the long weekend, with Monday being the warmest day.
The Ministry of Forests and Range will be increasing patrols and enforcement in some recreation areas this weekend to ensure campfires are kept small and are being properly monitored. Violation tickets will be issued as required.
Campers are being reminded to douse their fires with water so the ashes are cool to the touch before leaving an area. Smokers should not carelessly dispose of cigarettes near forests or grasslands. People who cause fires may be liable for fire suppression and damage costs.
