The beginning of construction of a new library in Quesnel is one step closer after Quesnel Council approved a tender for the completion of base building upgrades to the first floor of Quesnel’s City Hall.

The work is varied, but consists primarily of:

  • Infill of the two swimming pools.
  • The removal and infill of existing stairs to the change area.
  • Selective demolition.
  • Electrical work.

The contract was awarded to True Construction in the amount of $212,478.  That is 8.2% more than the initial budget estimates, the City says the  rason for the increase is that the initial specifications and  estimates  are more than a year old.  Since that tme, the cost of construction and materials have climbed.

While the work is expected to  take three months to complete, no construction start date has been scheduled as yet.

The City of Quesnel and the Cariboo Regional District reached an agreement to locate the new Quesnel library in City Hall in May of this year. Under that agreement, the Cariboo Regional District  bought  a 1/5 interest in  Quesnel City Hall.  Quesnel will spend $450 thousand on base building upgrades to make the ground floor suitable for the development of a library.   The Cariboo Regional District will provide $10 thousand  a year to cover the building operating expenses, while the City of Quesnel will  buy the existing library site for $122 thousand and will provide 29 parking stalls for the new library.

And yet the books shall be tattered and worn.

I think if that estimate was the City's, the City becomes the low bidder and gets to do the job for that.
