Recalled Oysters No Problem In P.G.

    The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued  a notice about   the recall of oysters from the Hood Canal 5 growing area in Washington State.

The oysters may be linked to an outbreak of vibriosis.  Vibriosis is caused by a naturally occurring bacterium, Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, headache, fever, and chills. Symptoms usually appear about 12-24 hours after eating infected shellfish. Severe illness is rare and occurs more commonly in persons with weakened immune systems.

Although the Canadian Food Inspection Agency says some of the oysters were shipped to Prince George for sale,  the oysters never actually made it on to the shelf for consumers says Anchors Seafood Manager Micki Rode.  "We purchased one box of the product,  but as is the case with  shellfish, we normally  hang on to it for a couple of days just to prevent situations like this."

Rode says the oysters are called "pebble cove oysters" .

For anyone who may have been  vacationing in other parts of B.C. and purchased  oysters, here are the other outlets in the Procinve which received some of the product now being recalled.

The importer, Albion Fisheries Ltd., Vancouver, British Columbia, is voluntarily recalling these oysters from the marketplace. 

Although there has been an outbreak of vibriosis in the U.S which may be linked to this product,  there have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these oysters in Canada.

If you don't buy american goods you should be a lot safer.
First they were bombing us they are now trying to poison us...go figure
When I was a kid growing up on the coast,we picked Oysters and Clams pretty much where ever we liked and never even worried about them being toxic.
Then the Shellfish leases came into play and that all came to an end.
What was left was soon covered by bans due to pollution and picking a feed of fresh oysters became a thing of the past.
I guess there is still some picking done but, it is risky at best most times.
That still doesn't explain why we import them from the states unless it is a pollution issue which would not suprise me at all!
