School District 57 is getting set for the return to class and expects enrolment to be down.  Superintendent Brian Pepper says the  true numbers are still  over a month away “Of course we won’t know the actual figures until September 30th, but we are anticipating  fewer students.”  Last year, the District had a total of 14,983 full time students, this year the expectation is for 14,619, a drop of 364.

Pepper says the difference in funding won’t be a factor “We are well positioned,  we budgeted for reduced numbers of students.”

The Superintendent says while all programs will be continued and there haven’t been any programs cut,  the roster of teachers has been reduced  by nine full time equivalents from 790 teachers in the  District to 781.

With meetings underway through the next week to prep for the return to school, Pepper says so far the only “spanner in the wheels” has been the School District’s voice mail system.  The District’s headquarters are in the building that used to be home to Telus, but the telephone voice mail system started acting up on Wednesday.  Most messages have been lost.  “We hope to have it all sorted out and repaired by next week” says Pepper.

Families must be moving to greener pastures like Alberta where a person can get a job paying over minimum wage unlike here in B.C.
Actually the pay is no different in Alberta, there is just more work available and you can work longer hours. Just had a visit from a family that moved to Alberta 6 years ago. A new house on a small acreage west of Edmonton, with no well water (restriction on wells), now sells for $475,000. We think it is booming in BC right now, but they can't believe how quiet it is around PG!
"with no well water (restriction on wells)"

Sounds like that would not be the place for the fellow who wants to bottle water to go set up a company. He may have a better chance in Valemount after all.

:p)
Maybe this will give the Mayor a little more of an indication that the population is if not decreasing at least staying the same.

Of course he will say **How is this possible with housing starts up, employment up, etc; etc; etc;**
Maybe this should raise the question of why Canadians are not having families anymore? Is it abortion that is killing off the next generation, or is it economics of a fully employed house hold required in todays world, or is it the cheep mortgage driven housing bubble (ie debt slavery for a suitable family home), or is it the tax regime in place that doesn't allow income splitting?

IMO our government has been at war with the family unit for at least 30 years and they try to hide it with immigration. When one looks at these policies one sees the same problems accross the western world with the same predictable results.
you just may have something there Chadermando!
Well people in about two more years we are going to be having another round of school closures. The transitory funding the school board has been getting will have ran out by then and some school will have to close, even though it is probably close to full but we just will not be able to afford to have it around. Any guesses which school ?
The lack of available dollars is this province is going to get much worse!
Why?
Because every available cent is being funneled to the 2010 Olympics right now,and when they are over,we will really see things tighten up!
As an example,I drove the "Cariboo Connector" the last week and what a bloody mess.It is a disgrace, and very little being done with it, other than a token amount of seal coating which is a waste of time and money!
We need an election!!!
Before we have the election we need a party worth our votes. I am so not a liberal but given the alternatives and lack of good party leadership I think I would probably vote liberal. Might not agree with everything they are up to but the present alternatives are not putting anything forward that is any better.
"..IMO our government has been at war with the family unit for at least 30 years and they try to hide it with immigration..."

Had a laugh at the BBQ last night! Was feeding about twenty five people and then this lady points out this guy in the line up and says, "He's not from our party!"
So I try to talk to him but he doesn't understand English and just keeps moving along the line. So we gave him a steak and the rest of the trimmings, and he goes and sits down with the group! No one has a clue who he is except he is Korean and we see him around once in a while. Wonder if he has a family for the government to tax?
