Prince George, B.C - Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, QC/Beauce-Amiante, midget) continued her strong play at the National Women’s Team Fall Festival on Tuesday, scoring twice to help Team Canada Red to a 4-1 victory over Team Sweden.
Poulin scored goals at 4:15 of the second period and 10:45 of the third and assisted on the first-period goal by Bobbi Jo Slusar (Swift Current, SK/Univ. of Wisconsin, WCHA).
Jayna Hefford (Kingston, ON/Brampton, NWHL) was named Canada’s player of the game, as she earned three assists. Hefford helped set up both of Poulin’s goals.
Team Red got off to a quick start in the first period. While shorthanded, Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, ON/Etobicoke, NWHL) chased after a loose puck and went in alone on Sweden’s Sarah Grahn. Wakefield deked to her forehand and beat Grahn to make it 1-0 at the 4:06 mark.
Red extended its lead at 7:50, when Slusar blasted a point shot past Grahn. Team Red fired 40 shots at Grahn over three periods.
Sweden’s lone goal came at 11:55 of the first. Emma Eliasson took a shot from the point, which bounced off the shin of a Team Red defender and through the legs of Shannon Szabados (Edmonton, AB/Fort Saskatchewan, AJHL).
Team Red has now won three games in a row at the Fall Festival. Red will face Team Canada White on Wednesday night at the Prince George Coliseum (7 p.m.).
