Prince George Man to Get Medal

A Prince George man is among a group of people to be recognized for bravery in rescuing two men trapped in a Terrace area mudslide three years ago.
A release from the Office of the Governor General says the rescuers will be awarded a national Medal of Bravery, saying their involvement in the rescue was done "without regard for their own safety."
Steve Korpi of Prince George, joined two RCMP officers, three firefighters and five other civilians August 27th , 2004 in rescuing two men, Michael Willians and Alan Jones of Terrace .
Williams was up to his neck in mud and debris, Jones was stuck in mud that was a metre deep and unable to get free. There was a second slide imminent.
Steve Korpi joined Eric Haughian of Surrey, Murray Kuemper and Jason Souch, both of Terrace, used their hands to dig Jones out.
Roger Licht and Lloyd Rice, both of Montana, joined Terrace fire chief Randy Smith, firefighters Robert Larmour and Fred Euverman, as well as Sgt. Kevin Schur and Cst. Jason Barnhill of the RCMP, in pulling Williams to safety just as the second slide hit.
The eleven involved in the Terrace slide rescue are among 23 who will be honoured at a ceremony to be held at Rideau Hall in Ottawa at a later date.
