New Charles Jago Sport Centre is officially open

The $30.75 million dollar Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre is now open, and   there are hopes the centre will open the doors to sports tourism as well as provide a  new facility providing new fitness options.  The question is, will it do so at the expense of other fitness clubs in Prince George?

Al Work, the manager, and operator of the Roll-A Dome says that his company will lose some of its users to the Charles Jago  Northern Sports Center, but ,says Work "For example the Lacrosse Association is happy because they will get more rink time."

Before the center opened , UNBC and the Soccer League had been using the Roll-A Dome, they have now moved to the new center. "Floor hockey and some other activities will now be able to have more rink time" Work added. Floor hockey for example he says used to get only about 4 hours a week "We now will be able to offer much more time."
The Roll-a Dome  says it could see a down turn in use in the short term "The new facility will definitely effect us , we  feel that we will be back to normal within the next six months."

Meantime operators of fitness centers in the city took different positions on the new sport center which boasts a state of the art fitness center.
Communications Director of the YMCA Chris Kinch says "Anything that gets people out to get exercise is really our goal. We are volunteer driven, with good trainers and we are well established. Because we are volunteer driven we welcome the new facility at UNBC."
Other fitness centers, say that they are concerned with the short term impact on whether they will lose customers.
At least one facility said that they cater to women only and that means a great deal in people choosing where to go.

Actually the facility is now closed. They had the Grand Opening before the building was fully done. Had to time it with the other events going on for the Alumni, etc. I believe it will be another 2-3 weeks before the public can re-enter the building again.
In my humble opinion, had they cared one way or the other , this would have been considered, BEFORE the center was built not as an after thought.
I still believe that this was built for a very elite priveleged few, and paid for by the many.
Maybe they will lose the keys to the doors...
A wonderful facility, a great show piece but I do wonder about the actual cost of it overall and the actual NEED.
Money that could have been better spent in other areas I think!
What's the point?
Who were they trying to impress?
As usual we feature totally uninformed opinions.
There is an enormous shortage of gymnasium space in this town...I challenge you to try and book some..go ahead, try.
Indoor turf was non-existant and is already booked solid with enough demand for another similar surface.
And "surprisingly" enough 95% of the time is booked by community groups...PGYSA, Minor Basketball, Youth Volleyball, etc.. hardly the "elite" crew the doomsayers keep spouting off about.
Seems to me if it's almost full already there must have been a huge NEED.
Do the math..... a yearly membership at this facility is VERY comparable to the Y and all other fitness clubs...I fail to see the vaildity of that argument.
go gettum realitycheck...agree with you 101%
Should free up some space at the Civic Centre, and at CNC. Who is going to get a yearly membership for $533.00. I suspect those that presently have memberships at other facilities. So there will be a drop in memberships at say the *Y* etc;

What do community groups pay for time in comparsion to individuals.??

The forecasted cost of this facilit is $600,000.00 cost over revenue generated, and it could be worse depending on how many people sign on.

This is a perfect opportunity for all those people who are so in favour of these types of huge expenditures to push themselves away from their keyboards, reach for their wallets or purse, write a cheque for $533.00 to support this facility and join the NSC.

Will they do so? I doubt it. However we will be able to tell in the not to distant future.
The NSC will have an effect on the Cougars, however. I expecet attendance to Timberwolf games to go from about 800 to nearly 2000 per game - it's called the venue effect.

The venue effect was one of the reasons the Multiplex was nearly sold out game after game in the early years. Everyone went to check out the new venue, and found everyone else there. Then they went because everyone else was there.

As we can see now, the venue effect wears off after awhile, and there is no getting it back.

So the UNBC Timberwolves will enjoy the packed house -and the fans will find the basketball experience so much more exciting than the WHL experience, and it will have little to do with the basketball.
You could be right bohemian. This years first Cougers game was the lowest ever in attendence. The second was even worse with 2682 paid seats, and it seems roughly 1500 actual people in attendence.

A City with a small population like Prince George can handle only so many facilities successfully and then they all start to feel the crunch. We should almost be there. Throw in the Casino which pulls away a lot of people and you dont have enough to go around. Certainly not if they should all take place on a Friday or Saturday night.

build it and they will come...

I wonder if Rick Brodsky will notice?
