As of the end of September, housing starts in Prince George were up over the year to date figures for 2006.

As for multiple family units, there have been 22 started  between January and  the  end of September in 2007, compared to  37  starts during  the same period in  2006.  That’s a drop of 40.5%.

For several other communities, it was the construction of multiple family units which buoyed the market.

Kelowna’s starts  were up 1.6 %  overall, with  a 3.8 %  increase in multiple family  unit construction offsetting the losses in  single family residential starts.

Kamloops  has an overall  increase of 8.6%  with a 47.3%  increase in multiple family units,

Nanaimo  is showing an overall increase of 1.3%,  with  18.3% more multi-family units started, and  Chilliwack  is showing an overall increase in housing starts of 45.6%  and that is because of the 122.6%  increase in  multiple family units.

Of the urban centres  surveyed, only Prince George and Abbotsford are recording year to date increases in single family residential starts.

Problem solved. Send the Back Packer Hotel customers to any city except PG and Abbotsford.
And guess what, they will ship us theirs.
It would be interesting to see that stats on how many of these PG homes are pre-sold or just being built on spec?
