The Written Word: Rafe Mair - October 14th

There are two essential ingredients in an opposition political party.

First it must oppose and do so in a way that shows good research and plausible argument. The public must be presented with alternative policies or perhaps convinced that the issue should simply be left alone. Oppositions must be tough, no holds barred. A government that is not closely watched and criticized gets away with murder and, worse, becomes a bad government for the want of testing.

An opposition must also be a government in waiting and appear to be so to the voters. It must demonstrate that not only can it criticize government policies it has doable policies of its own and the appropriate people to do the job. The Carole James led BC NDP fail badly on both counts especially the latter. As one good example they have been utterly bewildered by the Campbell’s Gateway project. This is because Ms. James didn’t think through a policy that took into account the fact that some of that huge project – widening of Highway #1 and twinning of the Port Mann Bridge - is supported by people of all stripes who are daily hostages to endless traffic jams. She didn’t realize that the South Fraser Perimeter Road and the expanding of Deltaport were unpopular in the Delta Constituency which is Liberal territory and was thus where the political arrows ought to be shot.

There have been stars – Adrian Dix on healthcare for one. But when you are an opposition party and members other than the leader are seen as the only effective ones you have trouble, big time.

It’s not good for the province that the governing party is without effective opposition.

Sad to relate there will be no effective NDP as long as it’s being led by Carole James, a person of great talents which do not, unhappily, include leading a political party in a two party Parliamentary system.

I don't always agree with Rafe but I think he is bang on here.
As an ex-liberal mainly because of Gordon Campbells leadership,Carole James frustrates the hell out of me.
For the most part, she is a completely ineffective opposition leader and a major disapointment to the NDP I am sure.
If she is not, then they are party in major trouble.
The big mystery is,why is she still there?
Her leadership(or lack of)allows the B.C.liberals a free reign to do as they please.
And that is a really BAD for B.C.
I have never voted NDP in my life and the lack of choices as to who I actually DO vote for, is pathetic!
Unfortunately,I find that one of the biggest draw backs to the present party system.
Under Carole James leadership, the NDP will eventually devour itself from within, probably sooner than later!
"...and the lack of choices as to who I actually DO vote for, is pathetic!"

It really is! In Britain they have only Conservative vs. Labour, in the States Democrats vs. Republican, here Liberal vs. Tories, NDP vs. Liberal provincially.

When a third choice arises, like the Reform Party did in Canada it is ridiculed and shunned and finally relegated to the dustbin of history by unwarranted charges of racism.

It works every time.

Greens? People are afraid of the draconian measures proposed by the Greens. The economy would totally tank within a year.

I did not take any interest in it, but what other candidates were offered to the delegates at the NDP leadership convention which opted for Ms. James?

Ms. James may indeed have been the best choice overall.

Obviously, not every party condones the extreme disloyalty that led to the demise of leader Stockwell Day who had been chosen by the members as the legitimate leader - so the NDP members would probably much rather be loyal and stick with Ms. James and take any lumps just like the Liberals have stuck with Mr. Campbell.

Ms. James has a difficult job and one wonders if she is asking for input from those closest to her in the party or if she is trying to wing it on her own.

If she and those many NDP MLAs who could suggest to her wiser choices keep stumbling as a group - then they are certainly not electable as an alternative to the present Liberal government.

With respect to the twinning of the Port Mann Bridge, Carol James said that before anything is done a plan for mass transit must be put in place. She is not against the twinning if a proper plan is in place. Without a plan, the traffic quagmire will continue.
From the B.C. Government website about the twinning of the Port Mann Bridge:

"The pre-design concept proposes a new parallel bridge on the west side of the existing Port Mann Bridge, which would also provide cycling access and be designed to accommodate potential future light rail transit. With this additional capacity, one lane in each direction will be designated as an HOV lane, significantly expanding the existing HOV network. It will then be possible to accommodate bus service so that TransLink has the opportunity to provide reliable scheduled connections between communities north and south of the Fraser River. The existing Port Mann Bridge will accommodate westbound traffic and the new bridge will handle eastbound traffic."

Mass transit is part of the project.
Mass transit is now part of the project but the BC Liberals still do not have an overall plan for mass transit in the lower mainland. They are just offering bandaid solutions.
Maybe they should look at Greater Toronto - Hamilton to Oshawa and its GO TRANSIT system as a model .. The GVRD should be looking at this. Create a crown agency and be done with it.

As Carol James speech before the UBCM makes clear, the NDP are fundamentally opposed to the Gateway project and the failed car-oriented vision it represents.

This isn't some abstract debate about whether the Port Mann Bridge should ever be improved in theory; it's about whether we support the Campbell/Falcon sprawl and pollution combo called Gateway, and Carole has clearly said "no" in both her speech and in the media interviews. I don't care what some other MLA said to BCTV, the leader's words always trump any other party spokesperson.

Yes, we just stop building highways and bridges and force people to park their cars and walk!

If it is not a debate about the twinning of the Port Mann Bridge, then let's stop the politicking and start building it!
