Councilor Brain Skakun’s notice of motion to have the Mayor write the Prime Minister with a view to having Paul Martin come to the region, was an effort to have the P.M. see for himself the severity of the Pine beetle problem.

When you heard Councilor Don Basserman remark that he wouldn’t support the move because as he put it “ The likelihood of him coming is remote at best” was truly one of those “where is your head?” moments.
Of course he won’t come if you don’t ask.

As for the comments by the Mayor that he is involved in a meeting with the Prime Minister hopefully at the end of September, is just more gobbly gook. It is worth a try to get the Prime Minister to visit the area, no matter how he may come to the region.

The argument at city hall last night was “look at what we’ve already done.” Well the truth of the matter is it hasn’t been enough, we haven’t been given a front and center focus except with Stephen Harper who obviously felt it was a major issue.

If the Municipal convention is to hear the concerns, fair and well , if they are to pass a resolution fair and well , that does not detract from what we are doing in this area.

Rejecting the idea of a letter inviting the Prime Minister to come for a first hand view of a very serious problem was more politics than logic.

I’m Meisner, and that is one man’s opinion.

And, pray tell, what did you expect???
Have Skakun steal the Mayors thunder???
I think not!!!!
A letter requesting the P M attend in this area and view the massive destruction would have been fitting.
These are not "rocket scientists" taking up room in Prince George council chambers.
Why do you expect so much??
The Mayor who speaks with the voice of authority, will do us all proud if left in charge!!!!
Won't he????
Keep the faith!!!!! (joke)
Bang on Ben!!

This is a matter of getting as many forces to play as possible. If they are afraid that they are trying to circumvent protocol, all it takes is writing a request in a diplomatic fashion so as not to slight the process.

The problem is, there may be no one who understand that, let alone write such a request in such a way that if there is a rejection that one does not lose face.

This is an extraordinary event. Extraordinary events require extraordinary efforts. Waiting for protocol is simply not in the cards for a true disaster situation. We have been waiting for protocol far too long.

Of course part of the probelm is that no one really has a solution. At this time it appears money is being thrown at the situation without a comprehensive plan.

I am starting to think that the "beetle boss" is about as good at this as the head of FEMA in the US.

We need someone who is used to undertaking major projects and handling them successfully, especially in the area of matching markets with opportunities.

I have no idea why the name Pattison comes to mind.
