The City of Quesnel will send a delegation of three Councilors along with Mayor Nate Bello, to Victoria to lobby for economic diversification funds for the area.
The move came after Quesnel Council was told that an earlier meeting with government members and officials in Ottawa had brought results in the form of a $150,000 dollar grant for Quesnel to investigate Forest Bio-Energy and Bi-Product Commercial facilities.
Council passed a resolution that will allow staff and The Quesnel Community and Economic DevelopmentCorporation to file Expressions of Interest for funding to the Western Economic Diversification’s Mountain Pine Beetle Community Economic Diversification Initiative.
This program is designed to help diversify the economic foundations of forest-dependent communitiesand contribute to their long-term stability.
There is $33 million available over the next two years. Some of the areas for which EOIs will be submitted include transportation infrastructure, tourism development, land development, agricultural diversification and community marketing.
In all, the amount Quesnel Council is seeking is about $10.15 Million. It is expected WED will contact City staff to acknowledge which items have been highlighted to move to the next stage, which includes more detailed project proposals and costs.
