I agree about full restitution when it comes to willfull crimes like this one. Better yet full restitution paid for at minimum wage cleaning ditches or some other public good that needs to be done.

According to Harper, Hill & Harris the sentences have been stiffened, so let's see if he is going to spend a couple of years in the slammer where he belongs.

Diplomat. The sentences have not yet been stiffened because the legislation has been held up in the Liberal dominated Senate and for other reasons.

This legislation should be brought forward later this month in an omnibus bill and it will be presented as a confidence motion, so if the Liberals and their close cousins the NDP and the Bloc do not pass it we will be going into an election. The fact that the Liberals, Bloc, and NDP do not want an election at this time means it will probably pass. It will then take some time before the ramifications of the bill reach ground level, however you can rest assured that those who commit crimes with guns etc will be receiving longer sentences.

We got into this mess mainly because of the left leaning, Liberals, NDP, and Bloc political parties who for some reason that I cannot comprehend are soft on crime.

Harper and the Conservatives if given a majority will bring a lot of this **BS** to a halt, and although I dont see longer jail time as a solution to the main problem, it certainly takes crime committing individuals off the streets for a longer period of time, and that in itself helps.

The equivalent on the right is liberal just right of center, conservatism medium right and fascism far right. Fascism then leads to anarchy, making a nice circle.

There are consequences for our behavior. The consequences should be a deterrant to their unacceptable behavior.

It's critical we have judges willing to enforce the deterrants and politicians willing to give them clear direction. It amazes me, how appointed judges have so much authority and don't seem to have to answer to anyone. I hope that changes with this government. Chester

Judges ain't accountable so why should the perps? Everyone's fault, and no ones fault.

I have on previous occasions suggested that convicted criminals be required to compensate their victims in addition to whatever sentence they receive. This could be done through the income tax structure quite easily I would imagine. An extra deduction from all income set by the judge, perhaps 10-20%, and sent to the victims by the courts. It should not be allowed as a tax expense but should be deducted every pay check until paid off.

Obviously, not all convicted criminals would comply, but a large number of them would have to.

In the spirit of "Restorative Justice", (a great idea that never really got off the ground) I would like to see him go to work at Kal Tire's retread plant and repair all those sidewalls himself. He would learn a trade and maybe even land a job out of it. After he's completed making reparation to all his victims, he could do some tires for charity to repay society for his actions.

ammonra.. criminals have deductions from their income? Drug dealers don't get pay cheques. Silly goose! And I doubt they declare their income to the Feds either. Just kill em.

Not all criminals are drug dealers, Harbinger, some work as well as prey on others. Vandals, such as described in the article, may well have a job or get one in the future. However, As I said, not all will comply, but a lot would. For those any order from a judge should remain in effect accruing interest until paid off 20 or 30 years later.

For those who do not put in tax returns I suggest confiscation of their assets. If you kill 'em, they can't pay for the damage they cause - a case of cutting of your nose to spite your face.

This may not be perfect, but is fairer than what happens now.
