Northern Health’s Board received an update on further work on the Northern Cancer Control Strategy.
At its March 2005 meeting, the NH Board requested more investigation into three areas :
1. Reasons behind the differences in cancer outcomes between the North and other regions;
2. What action needs to be taken to improve survival rates of Northern BC residents; and
3. Different models to provide systemic therapy and radiation therapy services in small populations.
The steering committee investigating radiotherapy services in small population centres met last week. Physicians who practice in Northern hospitals, medical staff from the BC Cancer Agency, and NH staff have been involved in that effort. Further work is also taking place in reviewing chemotherapy services across Northern BC, along with a study to determine how early in development are cancers being diagnosed in Northern BC patients.
The working groups on chemotherapy and radiotherapy will provide reports to the Northern Health Board at its November meeting. This information will also be used as background for a public consultation on cancer care to be carried out early next year.
“Throughout this current process and our work earlier this year that has resulted in several service changes, our goal is to strengthen cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and palliative care,” said Burghardt. “I am confident that the work now underway will also help meet that goal. I know the Board looks forward to receiving the report in November.”

IMO fight for your own rights first, that's what they are doing after all in those regions. Why should we be any different. I bet we pay more taxes than those regions with cancer clinics so I don't understand what the self sacrificing arguement is all about?
