Wal-Mart Canada has announced  it will  be  keeping its Canadian stores open 24 hours a day from December  1-Christmas Eve. The Prince George store is one of the  80  stores in Canada  that will take part in the  24-7 program.

Wal Mart has 298 stores across Canada, 80 of those stores will begin around-the-clock operations in the next week.

"One way to get into the holiday spirit is to take the stress out of shopping," said Sylvain Prud'homme, Wal-Mart Canada's senior vice president of operations. "We hear again and again, the single most meaningful change we can make for holiday shoppers is to deliver convenience. What's more convenient than a store open whenever you're ready to shop?"

Wal-Mart says it initially offered  the 24 hour shopping as a gimmick, but  learned it was appreciated for its convenience factor.

The company's plan for extended hours has substantially increased for 2007 with 25 per cent more stores participating. Last year, 59 Wal-Mart stores opened continuously from December 18 and 24. This year, 80 stores are  involved in the 'round the clock sales.

Okay, that's great.... now how about having more than one cashier open during that 24 hour period !!!

Goodtimes..
Shameless commercialism. Worship the almighty dollar, thats the american way, and our way too, I fear. Christmas shopping on Remembrance day for example, what better way to demonstrate your total indifference to the sacrifice fellow Canadians made on your behalf?
NO RESPECT.
Why not stay open Christmas day too? Nab those really late shoppers, suck them in with 'free stuff' Oh that won't do, we would have to pay overtime, and that goes against the credo of big retail. I hope my comments demonstrate my indifference to the worship of money and crass commercialism. Take back the night! (xmas night)

Absolutely no need for them to be open 24-7 other than pure greed!
I was in there last weekend and it was a disgrace!
Terrible service and yes,a big shortage of cashiers!
What the hell is the matter with people?
There are better places to shop in PG than Wally World!
It's a free market economy, if they feel there is value in it why wouldn't they open?

If you don't feel there is value in it, don't go... Isn't that the way our economy works?

I refused to shop on Rememberence Day.

Christmas day is another day altogether. Not everyone recognizes it, and if you don't want to shop then, don't.

That's how a free enterprise system works.
Who cares what Wal-Mart does. If you don't like it don't go there. Simple.
Okay, then I won't! Take that!

Ditto.
Gonna keep them RVers awake 24/7, too? If there are any this time of year.
Harbinger = LOL

I get a kick out of the RV'ers in the Walmart parking lot,
Full Size pickup truck usually diesel = $60k
Fancy RV with multiple slide outs = $40k
'Camping' at Walmart cause you are too cheap, or lazy to find a real campsite = PRICELESS
Actually they have been boondocking on city property as well...
But that is a little of the topic of the story isn't it...
I suppose it will be helpful to those who work shifts....
I can't see me getting out of a nice warm bed just to go there though...
each to their own.
Who hasn't woken up at 3am with a sudden need to buy a dozen tube sox for $3.99?
I actually like the idea of stores being open 24 hours at this time of the year. I would rather that then them being open on Sundays or holidays. I won't shop on Sundays or holidays, but I will shop at 3AM if the store is open.
Just play safe... saw on some news channel last night the latest ploy to steal x-mas goods is to follow the owner of the car to the next store or even home to take it. 5pm is more likely time to be spotted at bad behavior than is 3 when most are asleep...
However, for the stores, offering shopping to the bar closing crowd might boost profits, after all, we make the bad decisions when we are shopping aimlessly or drunk, combine them for a real fun night.
Open 24/7 is one thing. Trying to find someone who is willing or able to help you with anything will be impossible. It's already a challenge in the daytime during regular hours. Thanks but no thanks. Not for me. Chester
