The Union of B.C. Municipalities starts its annual general meeting tomorrow (27th -30th) and there are plenty of issues to be discussed.

There are some 200 resolutions to be dealt with there should be no surprise that more than a few deal with issues like the mountain pine beetle.

When it comes to the “beetle” Prince George has a resolution on the floor asking the UBCM to lobby the Provincial and Federal governments to declare the pine beetle infestation a natural disaster and provide financial assistance to local governments, municipalities, and individual property owners to help eliminate the hazards associated with the beetle infestation.

The UBCM notes that while the Federal and Provincial Governments have come across with some cash, this would trigger the financial assistance not presently covered.

Quesnel also wants the UBCM to lobby governments to establish a pine beetle trust fund. Again, the UBCM says it is aware Ottawa and Victoria have provided money for some programs, but this request is for a long term strategy to help communities diversify their economies.

There are a couple of calls for legislation, including licensing of all-terrain-vehicles, mandatory child booster seats for kids aged 4-8 or 40 to 80 pounds and tougher drug trafficking sentences.
