Priovincial Health Minister George Abbott has announced a little more than $4 million dollars has been earmarked for communitites throughout the province for information, resources and support to pronmote healthy lifestyles. The money will be distributed as follows:
$500 thousand to develop the Action Schools B.C. Healthy Eating Module that will teach kids in elementary and middle schools about nuutrition
$450,000 for an electronic professional services database that provides up-to-date nutrition information to dietitians, created by Dietitians of Canada in partnership with Dial-A-Dietitian.
$1.5 million for the Community Food Action Initiative, to provide grants to communities through the health authorities for things like community kitchensand gardens.
$1.5 million for municipal governments, health districts and partner organizations to promote healthy lifestyles at the community level.
$285,000 for UBCM’s Healthy Communities Initiative and Healthy Planning Seminars, to support communities in developing healthy public policy and encourage public leaders to talk about healthy planning in their communities.
