The fall radio ratings results have been released  and CBC has moved into 1St place.

For the purpose of simplicity, Opinion250 has used the percentage of audience figures of all persons tuned, aged 12+ Central Tuning area

CBC                                      21.2%

CJCI (The Wolf )                18.3 %

94-X                                     18.1%

CKKN ( 101.3 The River)  17.1%

CKDV (The Drive )              11.6%

These figures represent a total of 86.3% of the audience, the balance is made up of Satellite tuning, or the new community station and university station, plus out of town cable tuning.

The ratings are conducted  at least twice a year, ( spring and fall) and often  as many as four times a year ( Spring, fall, winter and summer).

The Bureau of Broadcast Measurement  conducts  the survey  by sending  a diary to households, and asking  those who live in the homes to  keep track of their listening habits over  a six week  period.

The diaries are then returned to BBM , the  responses calculated and  released. The ratings are used by many stations to show advertisers their share of the overall market, or  a segment of the market.

I'm not suprised by these scores. The Pattison stations have all but abandoned older listeners who seek something mellow and something informative.
The snuffing out of Ben's program was, at least in my mind, the end of intelligent radio in Prince George.
And to have the hapless CBC come in first among listeners, has to be a wake up call for the Pattison Group who lust for profits. It would be nice if there was something for thinking adults in our area.
Well there is......... I just can't think what it is.... dammit !!!
No surprise. There is lots of variety of music out there but all you hear on the unregulated stations is two choices of music.

AaaaaaaEEawaaaaYaaawYayayawyaw!

or

OooohhTaaataaOOhhhaaYeeYeeAwwEiooAwawawooo!

Pick any music on the regular stations and that is what you hear.

I don't listen to CBC Radio too much either as the BC CBC Radio have a very small circle of friends that are ALWAYS whining about something. CBC is mostly about the area around Moscover and is so politically correct it is painful.
While I do listen to CBC,particularly when I am driving,it is probably time to begin selling advertizing on the station in limited amounts.
It takes a pretty big chunk of taxpayer dollars in operating costs, and that just isn't realistic in today's world.
When I lived in the bush during the winter months a number of years ago,it was a welcoming voice that made the isolation easier.
At one time,it was a lifeline for people in isolated communities, but satellite radio and TV have made it less of an issue.
The CBC should just sell it's TV division and use the money to keep CBC radio alive and well.
CBC blows! every time i have listened to it there is alway some artsy fartsy granola bar eating tree hugging pansey rambling on about why blue is better then red ect... If the programs on there represent the best of canadian radio and art then we dont have a hope in the global picture to promote our artists and the sad thing the tax payers are paying for it..
However I do agree with Andyfreeze about it being a welcoming voice to the isolated listener. But now my sat radio fills that void.
Grim......
Or perhaps CBC is doing a better job than the other stations bringing local news and current affairs to the airwaves? How do you know unless you listen?
Actually.CBC news sucks the big one!
They will broadcast the exact same news all day long at times with no changes.
The other day I counted the same news program 4 damn times in a row!
And yes,you are right about the artsy fartsy crap northman.
Pretty hard to take sometimes, and far too much of it.
You couldn't even call it human interest stuff it is so truly bizzare!!
Who the hell cares about "learning to talk about books that you have not read"??
And the interview was with a guy from France you couldn't even understand!!!!
They actually had a half hour program about just that the other day!!!
AAARGH!
Local radio - to put it bluntly is horrible. Crappy commercials, third rate DJ's and insane repetition.....I gladly shell out the monthly fee for satellite radio to not have to listen to the local garbage...

It only makes sense that CBC is in first place - plain and simple - no commercials!
Frightening comments. CBC is the only radio where you CAN get anything intelligent. How can you possibly say that their news is crappy? They are by far the absolute best at bringing informative and often very 'deep' stories about current affairs, not just locally, but around the world. Those who are waffling on about the "artsy fartsy...." junk have obviously spent very little time listening to the CBC, and probably most of their time listening to incredibly insightful and intelligent Billy Ray Cyrus songs.
The pathetic pandering to the cultural bottom feeders in this town has won CBC first place.

Remember the motto of the comercial stations: If it has more than 3 chords - it doesn't get played.
"Remember the motto of the comercial stations: If it has more than 3 chords - it doesn't get played. "

That has to be one of the most uneducated and most idiotic comments I've heard in a while. Don't hack on radio stations just because YOU don't like what they choose to play for music. Also, start showing some facts on the above comment and we'll talk Culture boy. Until then, go back to being uneducated in the business of radio.
CBC probably does well with the older crowd. I know a few people who swear by it and most are 55+. It's also a decent way to kill a long car trip. A lot of the music they play is pretty "artsy, fartsy," but some of their talk shows are pretty good.

For day to day commuting, I just want some catchy, upbeat music and local news on the hour. Between 94X, The Drive, The River and my iPod, I can usually find something to listen to.

I think CBC Radio should have an all-news channel – like CBC Newsworld on TV. That would be a really useful contribution to Canadian radio.
Parrothead,

Why would they sell CBC television? It's one of the better things on the idiot box. You've got The National with my man Mansbridge, The Hour with George Strombolopolous (or whatever), This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Royal Canadian Air Farce, The Rick Mercer Report, Hockey Night in Canada, etc. I'd take that any day to the crappy sitcoms, soap operas, 'reality TV' shows, and Oprah's daily ego trip.
No actually we have spent lots of time listening to CBC so thats resoning for the heavy opinions. What has Billy Ray Cyrus got to do with anything? Im going to buy some airtime at cbc and have a Billy Ray marathon.
I spend a lot of time listening to CBC, and they do have some good programs.
They also have a lot of un-interesting, pointless crap!
And sorry, but some of it IS a bunch of artsy fartsy drivel that really serves no purpose.
This debate on CBC programing has gone on for years, and making fun of the CBC is a national pastime for canadians!
THAT is CBC's fault!
Geez, Art, you just described some of the crapiest television ever made. Air Farce? Maybe they could bring back the Anne Murray Specials, I'm sure you coots remember those....
Amen.....I'm with whoever said "The CBC Blows". And the worst part is that yes, we do pay for it. Bloody government!
The CBC gets about $800 million U.S.in government funding, which of course is actually taxpayer dollars.
They claim to have revenue of around $250 million over and above what they get from the government.
Between their TV programs and their radio programs,is it worth that kind of dough?
Perhaps a venue whose time has come and gone?
Instead of turning on the TV for the news this morning,I turned on CBC radio.
OH...MY...GOD!
Without the CBC (radio) our country would be reduced to getting our major news from CNN and FOX news types of services, and then just like the USA, we'd be getting sound bites and completely dumbed-down news instead of the often lengthy and in-debth reporting/stories we get from CBC. CBC is not scared to take on controversial topics and give you 'the other side of the story' and deep insights with their "deep" stories. Our local news does a good job of....local news....they don't have the resources or mandate to try to do the major stories the CBC can do. CBC is one area of public funding that I'm extremely happy to support. Not everyone listens to CBC, but apparently the majority of radio listeners in PG do, and I assume they have great ratings accross the country, so while some of you don't listen or appreciate it, CBC radio must be doing something right.
On what planet does 21.2% constitute a majority?????
Oh all right then, I should have said "....but apparently CBC is the most popular radio station in PG..."

30 million people a week watch American Idol but I'm gonna take a pass on that crap too.
You're equating CBC radio with American Idol????????????????? Weird!!!
My point - popular doesn't equal good.
Despite some bad programming, CBC will bring you some stories you will probably never hear about because they don't share the views of Canada's 3 media giants. Canada has some of the most filtered media in the world. Thankful for great docs and "The Passionate Eye"
Death: Point taken, but popular doesn't equal bad either, necessarily.
