The NDP Grinch That Tried to Steal Taxpayers’ Christmas

The story that unfolded in the House of Commons this week was not unlike the famous holiday tale of the Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

In this case it was Jack Layton and the New Democratic Party who schemed to steal the tax cuts that our Conservative Government had all wrapped up to deliver to Canadian taxpayers beginning in the New Year.

The NDP said ‘bah humbug’ to Bill C-28, which implements measures to reduce taxes to the lowest levels in 50 years. The bill puts into effect the $60-billion in broad-based tax relief proposed in our October 30th Economic Statement, as well as some final measures from Budget 2007.  In the last sitting week before Christmas, NDP MPs engaged in some last minute antics to delay the legislation’s passage and deny Canadians tax breaks and more.

Actually, it may have been slightly more palatable had the NDP fashioned their behaviour after that other famous Christmas character, Scrooge.  Miserly though he was, at least Mr. Scrooge possessed some fiscal conscience.  The NDP however, want to block your tax cuts so they can ‘spend, spend, spend’ on any number of rash, poorly-planned social engineering schemes and boondoggle programs that have failed to actually improve the lives of Canadians.

Meanwhile, our Conservative strategy involves fostering our nation’s economic future by aggressively paying down our nation’s debt; investing heavily in the country’s infrastructure, education and job training; and, reversing the over-taxation of taxpayers that escalated through 13 years of Liberal governance.

So what did the NDP want to keep from you?
For individuals:  a reduction in the lowest personal income tax rate to 15% RETROACTIVE to January 1, 2007; an increase in the basic personal amount to $9,600 RETRACTIVE to January 1, 2007 and a further increase in 2009; implementation of the Working Income Tax Benefit to help low-income Canadians; an expansion of the public transit tax credit; an enhanced child fitness tax credit to include special measures for children with disabilities; the implementation of the Registered Disability Savings Plan; and the elimination of income tax on scholarships.

For businesses:  a reduction in the small business income tax rate to 11% in 2008, a year earlier than previously planned; an increase in the lifetime capital gains exemption for small business owners, farmers and fishers; an increase in the deductible percentage of meal expenses for long-haul truck drivers; an extension of the mineral exploration tax credit; easier tax remittance and filing requirements for small businesses; and a reduction in the general corporate income tax rate to 15 percent by 2012.

ALL of these measures will ensure that Canadians can keep more of their hard-earned money to provide for themselves and their families.  And businesses will be able to invest more cash back into their operations so that they can grow and hire more workers.

This is what Jack Layton and the NDP worked so hard to deny the people of Canada this week … at least for the people of Whoville, the Grinch had a change of heart!

And what was it that the NDP wanted instead, there is no mention of that. Could it have been bigger tax cuts for the lowest income groups? Could it have been lower taxes for those least able to pay? Hey, that would have meant less for the highest income earners in the country and we couldn't have that, eh?

Scrooge McGrinch indeed!
Ammonra's right.
While I am NOT an NDP supporter,Hill should have at least have had the nuts to tell us why?
Doesn't really make sense that the NDP
would do this just to be nasty and buck the conservatives.
The NDP are not TOTAL idiots, they need support too to survive!
Me thinks Hill is using a bit of spin to try and make himself and his government look good?
He REALLY must think we are all stupid too!
increasing the personal excemption and decreasing the lowest tax bracket to 15% will be for the lowest income canadians.

I was hoping that the taxes across the board would go down as bracket creep is putting more and more people into the upper brackets. $70 000 is worth a lot less today than 20 years ago.
Andyfreeze: "Me thinks Hill is using a bit of spin to try and make himself and his government look good? He REALLY must think we are all stupid too!"

No way! How in the world could you ever come to such a rash conclusion as quoted above???

I am no NDPer, but I think I must fully agree with Ammonra's post!

Parliament must be a depressing place indeed:

According to Mr. Hill's reports there is on one side the Conservative Party, all pure and honest, compassionate and wise, with a decades long record of the same...

And then, not surprisingly, there is the rest of the parliamentary crowd on the other side, scheming, conniving, interfering, cruel, dumb, dishonest...

Black and white, either all good or all bad that is how some people see the world.

I am beginning to enjoy the broadcasts of the Ethics Committee and I am looking forward to a full inquiry into the Mulroney/Schreiber affair...which is a much needed exploratory expedition into the shadowy underworld of the things seldom heard or even suspected by the *ordinary* Canadian who trots off to work everyday and has much of his paycheque withheld by government before it gets to him or her.

Over and out.

Man !!! - talk about not being able to see the forest for the trees !!!

Anybody who takes a little time to get to know something about what's going on in Politics today, both Federally and Provincially, knows that what motivates a politician is the chance to serve and actually make a difference!! To do this, in our system, it really helps to get elected (duhh), and then get yourself into a position of power, or at least of influence, where you can begin to pull the strings that start to make things happen the way YOU want them to happen to keep the VOTES coming YOUR way !!

So here sits the NDP, and the Liberals, and a smattering of other Political hopefulls, yapping up the tree ( the party in power ), desperately trying to find a way to get to the top themselves, struggling to find the tinyest foothold ANYWHERE, and having damn little success !!

So what's gonna cause these wannabe's the most near heart attacks in this system ? --- THE AWFULL SCENARIO THAT THE PARTY IN POWER MIGHT ACTUALLY PASS SOME LEGISLATION THAT REALLY DOES HELP THOSE INDIVIDUALS THAT THESE WANNABE'S HAVE BEEN TRYING TO SUCK VOTES FROM, --- AND THUSLY, (HORROR OF HORRORS) ACTUALLY GET THEM RE-ELECTED AGAIN FOR ANOTHER TERM !!

Now we can't have that happen --- can we !!

Just ask the BC NDP about how many representatives we should have in the north, and you'll see what I'm on about here. 'Course ---- it'd be ok if there was no chance those representatives would be Liberals though.

palomino

Politicians may start out motivated to serve and actually make a difference palimino, but they sure as hell get that knocked out of them in a hurry!!
I don't care what Layton wants the money wasted on, it's high time the middle class in this country caught a break. Socialists are theives. Period. Who is Jack Layton to just help himself to peoples hard earned money?
Admiration for Ebenezer Scrooge's 'fiscal conscience'? Considering that the character was more focused on fiscal matters than social ones, it shouldn't be suprising to hear this from a conservative... more of the same pap: do more with less.
The NDP and Jack Layton in Ottawa are just a bunch of whoopie cushions. The sooner we get a Majority Government the sooner we will no longer have to listen to their socialist drivel.

Palamino has it right.
So let me see ..... the theory goes that if you allow people to keep more of "their" money they will continue to be good spenders ... to buy Chinese made stuff, eh????

And companies can hire more people with their hard earned investments and spend it on the French Riviera

And if the government doesn't use the money then they won't be able to do what business does, spend it on those things that governments should be spending it on ... national, provincial and urban infrastructure that is falling apart ... a health care system that does not have enough beds, enough staff, enough clinics, enough elder care homes .... an education system that is not educating enough people to service our needs .... riverbanks that are not properly protected as the areas they move through become urbanized ... mills that need to be relocated to improve air quality or use better scrubbing technology ..... oil sands extraction techniques that need improvement due to the phenomenal amount to greenhouse gases it produces .... alternate energy production technology .....

I could go on and on .... A pretty damn short sighted lot in quasi power …. Throwing money to the lowest common denominator of the population who does not know any different until they need some of those services … then they complain and can’t even put two and two together …..

And people like Palopu are talking out of both sides of their mouths ... complaining about Ottawa forcing the users of the airport to pay for improvements rather than the federal government who own the facilities ....

get your story straight people ..... can't burn the candle on both ends you know … show that you got some brains unlike the twerp who represents us in Ottawa … an embarrassment all around ….

Think about this for a while…

A friend is losing her job in the Rochester area of New York State. She works in a factory assembling break shoes for automotive vehicles.

She is losing her job because the company can no longer compete because it is cheaper to make the parts in China.

What was the straw that broke the camel’s back? The US $ dropped 20+% in relation to the C$, so the parts which they were buying in Canada became too expensive.

Since the Chinese yuan is more or less pegged to the US $ I am sure they will shortly be sending the entire assembly made in China to the US and Canuck car assembling companies via the new Prince Rupert shipping route. The parts used in the assembly and made in Canada will no longer be made in Canada. If Canada were to assemble them as well, it would be more expensive than the way they had been made.

So what great investment plans do those smart Conservative farmers have that will turn that type of bleeding around?

Are there conditions attached to those tax breaks that would benefit the country as a whole, or is this just throwing money to the wind?

What plan do they have that will prevent the parts from being produced in China and will be produced in Canada instead?
okay ... so they are not break shoes for break dancers ... they are brake shoes for automobile wheels ....

Were you burning the midnight oil over Jay Hill's latest political astuteness comments or were you just staying up late to watch the meteor shower???

:-)
When the NDP figure out where the money comes from, I will listen. Until then, I choose not to listen to them. First, they are not in power. Second, it appears that their motive is to erode the effectiveness of the party in power at all costs. The only way to change peoples minds is to present a better idea. The NDP dosen't have one. Chester
"When the NDP figure out where the money comes from..."

The NDP is not stupid! They figured out a long time that money can be had at banks!

And, almost unlimited amounts - when one has the entire province of B.C. as collateral the banks will lend virtually any amount and encourage the borrowing of even more!

That's how the banks (corporations) make insane profits year after year.

Maybe that is the part that the NDP hasn't grasped yet.
