Confluence of Nechako and Fraser Rivers

Prince George, B.C. - The ice jam on the Nechako River, which has caused the localized flooding that led to the declaration of a local state of emergency Monday, continues to expand and contract as water pushed floe ice from upstream into the west end of the jam. Water levels have fluctuated throughout the afternoon.

Some clear water has appeared toward the east end of the jam, which appears to be allowing some of the water to escape. It is not certain at this time whether or not this will allow the water levels to return to normal or if other fluctuations in the structure of the jam will maintain high water conditions.

A track machine was in use earlier this afternoon in the Foley Crescent area, breaking up some accumulated ice and appearing to create a small channel for water to escape.

Water levels have receded somewhat in the Pozer Road area after rising marginally earlier in the day. Water levels in the flooded areas of the CN Rail intermodal yard also receded during the course of the afternoon, falling about a foot in some areas.

City crews continue to deliver large quantities of sand and sandbags to houses and commercial and industrial properties at the request of the landowners or residents.

The City is also establishing a volunteer registry for citizens who wish to help those affected by the rising waters to fill and place sandbags. Anyone wanting to help out  should contact the Service Centre at 561-7600 for further information on how to register. It is important to register through the Civic Centre if you wish to become a volunteer.
