Prince George, B.C. - An evacuation order will be issued for some if not all of the residents at the Del Haven subdivision. The area was on a 24 hour flood watch over night as the ice jam on the Nechako River expanded to Aspen Lane.
Water levels fell about four inches overnight in the River Road East area as city crews and contractors tried to keep open channels for the water to run back into the Nechako. Residents in the River Road area were the first to receive evacuation orders Monday night and remain out of their homes. Residents in low-lying areas of Pulp Mill Road also remain evacuated, as do about a dozen businesses on McAloney Road after orders were issued Thursday night due to running water.
Installation of temporary gabion diking continues along Pulpmill Road today to protect the road surface in case the river rises again. The gabion diking was also installed around two City of Prince George facilities near the river’s edge northwest of flooded areas to protect the electrical infrastructure in case the water in those areas continues to rise. The Provincial Emergency Program provided three kilometers of gabion diking to the city. A meeting will be held this morning to discuss how the diking willbe placed on the River Road side.
Meantime, Public Safety and Solicitor General John Les will tour the flood areas today. He will also meet with members of the business group which has $200 million dollars in infrastructure at risk. The flooding has put more than 1000 people out of work.
