Under the campaign "Responding to a Critical Need," the Northern Medical Programs Trust goal was to raise $6 million for an endowment fund by the Spring of 2008. To date, 20 communities have pledged to support the NMPT, with the pledge amounts calculated on the basis of their populations. Prince George’s pledge amount was $2 million.
"This contribution from the City of Prince George is just the latest in a series of efforts the City has made to support the growth and development of UNBC," says UNBC President Don Cozzetto. "I don’t know of another Canadian university that is as strongly connected with its community. We don’t say it enough, but ‘thank you’ to the Mayor, Council, and citizens of Prince George."
The $6 million endowment in the NMPT will allow for about $300,000 to be paid out to students every year, forever. The funds are being managed by a Board that includes representatives of northern communities, UNBC, the Northern Medical Program, and corporate partners. It is this Board that identifies the criteria by which students can access the funds. It is expected that as the Trust grows, it will diversify into providing funding support for students in other health science programs, such as Nursing.
