Rogers Responds to One Man's Opinion

I read your recent comment in regards to potential mayoral candidates in the upcoming local government election.  (see Mayor Kinsley Has a Job Shadow)

There certainly have been many people who have asked me to run again,  but to be honest I’m enjoying my family, my career, and some of my volunteer work too much to think about it right now. If things change I’ll let you know.

I did chuckle a bit over your comments around different leadership styles.

I was quite surprised during the last election that some people couldn’t see through what was clearly a deliberate attempt by those trying desperately to hold onto power to spread misinformation.   I will advise you as I did them, that if you’re looking for an old fashioned politician who simply says what he or she thinks you want to hear just to get elected - someone who makes huge promises knowing full well they can’t be fulfilled - then keep looking because that’s not my style.

Now on the other hand if you want someone who is straight up with you and actually applies common sense before spouting off then I’m your guy.

Clearly, actions speak louder than words (particularly in politics) and as one of those who led the drive for the Multiplex and the Aquatic Centre you need look no further than the commemorative plaques on those buildings as evidence of my quiet determination to build a better City.

It’s the same roll-up-the-sleeves leadership style I employed in leading the great team of volunteers that staged the 2007 Royal Bank Cup. As you know that event generated almost $4 million in economic activity and was viewed by Hockey Canada as the “best ever” in the history of the national championship.

It’s the same calm and rational leadership style I use as the current chair of the City’s Trails Task Force, something that right now takes a higher priority than responding to speculation as to what might happen eleven months from now.

Great opening speech Dan, I guess that means you will be running for Mayor. Our city has hope again. Look forward to seeing you in the Mayors chair.
I wouldnt argue about the Aquatic Centre as it is a boon to the City and a Joy to Children and thats very important. I am somewhat less enthused by the Multiplex which seems to have peaked at about 2600 actual fans per game. (discounting 500 corporate tickets that are bought but not used) This facility costs taxpayers approx $600,000.00 per year, primarily because we make little or no money from the Cougers. The City gets 12.5% of the gross ticket sales and with sales averaging 3000 tickets per game at an average price of $14.00 per game this is peanuts. We might be far better off to let the Cougers relocate move the Spruce Kings to the Multiplex, open up the colusiem to general skating, and have more space available at the Multiplex for other functions that could better utilize the space and generate more money.

Other than that I think Rogers would be a good pick insofar as he might be able to slow down the insane spending taking place in this City which is driving up taxes, and debt, with no concern for those who have to pay the bills. Half a glass full Zurowski will not be the one to take on any fiscal responsibility, I expect we could expect more of the same from him.

Last but not least is the travelling Mayor, lover of Olympic Events, and Winter Mayors meetings in distant lands, in addition to his high paid job, plus expenses. This is a pretty cushy job to give up. We have Bejing, and Whislter yet to go, plus one overseas Winter Mayors Conference plus Prince George will host the Conference in 2010 just prior to the Olympics. This is pretty heady stuff that the Mayor would probably like to participate in. Dont count him out.
Dan was the only city official (!) who braved the cold wind and rain and cared enough to attend and address (in front of City Hall) the participants of Prince George's anti-war protest pro-peace rally on the occasion of the criminal and illegal invasion of the sovereign country of Iraq by our mighty southern neighbours.

All the other city elected officials played it safe and succumbed to the lure of political correctness and stayed away.

Dan is a very good thoughtful man in my opinion and I wish he would run again for Mayor.

Maybe Dan is too honest for the Prince George political machine.

I respect him and wouldn't want to see him lose again to the machinations of the political sytem in place in Prince George. I don't think they respect honesty and the rest of us have to pay for it in the loss of someone like Dan.

He won't respond to pressure he responds to what is best for our City. A good man and an honest one.
Well said, Foo738! It is so much easier to make boisterous and realistically unfulfillable promises and get elected with those rather than to stick to facts instead.

Here in P.G. I still see the old Cameron Street Bridge blocked off to traffic and the ultra visionary complete Quebec Street rejuvenation project still gathers dust in some foreign promoter's office.

Both top priority issues, of course, promised to be addressed immediately if not sooner.
Its all been said but Dan has my vote.

Cheers
I have known Dan for about 25 years from when we played some hockey together. He probably doesn't remember me but I remember him as being a very honest individual and truly a nice man. I hope he does run again and as Pal says "he might be able to slow down the insane spending taking place in this city".

Please Dan, run again, and you will have my vote again.
Good comments one and all. Now what we need to do is get our friends, relatives, and ourselves off our collective asses, and give him some support and our votes.

Maybe we will have to start a draft Rodgers Campaign.
I for one am holding my vote for Eugene Fetterly. No Fetterly, no vote.
Fair enough wallerfoot, this is a democracy.
