Report on Child Deaths 2 Months Away

Prince George, B.C. – The final report by the Representative for Children and Youth into the deaths of four young children may be complete by mid March.
Child and Youth Representative, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond says her report is based on all the information that has been gathered in the deaths of 4 year old Amanda Jean Simpson in Prince George, 7 month old Serena Weibe in Fort St. James, 14 month old Rowen Von Niederhausern in Terrace and 3 year old Savannah Hall in Prince George.
The Coroner’s inquest into the death of Savannah Hall was the last to be held and Turpel- Lafond says she is still waiting for a copy of the official documents from that inquest which ended November 3rd.
The four cases are different, yet they have what Turpel-Lafond calls “commonalities”. All four had links with the provincial child care system and in all four cases, issues of system funding, staffing and training were brought forth.
She will be looking to see how the system s for vulnerable children have changed or improved since the death of Amanda Jean Simpson in 1999. She says the work may bring forth recommendations on how the system can be strengthened and how the needs and safety of vulnerable children be met.
