Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George has made an addition to its plan to raise River Road, to .6 metres above the 200 year flood plain.

The road will be provided with ramps connected with driveways and parking lots. The ramps will be built in such a manner that  in the event the  dikes are breached, the ramps can be blocked to prevent water from  breaching the  roadway.

This was a major issue with the Nechako River Industry Group, as the initial plan for the raised road had no provision for workers or business owners to access their properties.

The road will be raised between Winton Global and the Cameron Street Overpass.  The new height will act as an earth berm  should  there be any further  breaches  to the gabion diking that  is along the  Nechako River’s  south bank.

The raising of the road will continue today and is expected to be complete Saturday.

The levels of the Nechako River have dropped at all monitoring stations, and there is some good news on the north side of the Nechako .The water levels have dropped enough to allow crews to start pumping water from the properties along the north bank of the Nechako.

Meantime,  the Nechako River Industry Group  industry has hired its own  engineers  and  hopes to have it’s own  flood mitigation plan  ready  this afternoon.

Has anyone calculated the effect of heat loss of that small dribble of water travelling 4 km to get there and then its effect, at a lower temp, on the ice and the large volume of ice cold water ?

Has anyone thought about a boom tug boat with some front end protection to work as an ice breaker from the downstream end, together with a hoe or two on a barge ? Some safety stuff to consider on this as well ?

I don't know the players there, but I'll put my money on the industry group
"The ramps will be built in such a manner that in the event the dikes are breached, the ramps can be blocked to prevent water from breaching the roadway."

This has got to be the stupidest comment I have yet read on this site. Think it through folks ..... if the road acts as the dike .... then the level of the road is the top of the dike ..... the access ramp goes to the top of the road ......

Water is not a vehicle with wheels .... water find its own level whether it encounters a vertical wall or a slope. like a beach .....

Unless the top of the road dips where the ramp is, blocking off the drive is unneccessary.

Who are these people?????
" ...... the initial plan for the raised road had no provision for workers or business owners to access their properties"

Isn't that just great ...... I think everyone is getting a bit tired ... they need to take a break so they can start thinking straight again ....

If we can hang on til the middle of March this problem will go away. If we can hang on til November and not forget, maybe we can turf out all these useless bozos at city hall.
How about all our taxes going to support this?

Not fair!
Okay they have finished building the River Rd dike behind our office and the flood water is still raising This is ground water and the local people (River Rd and PG Pulp Mill Rd) have been telling the City that ground water is the major probem.
But because we are just local citizens that have been living with the Nechako River for years we do not know anything.

John Brink told me that he wants some of the old River Channels opened so that the ground water would seek out the lower area. That would help now and would also be helpful for spring flooding
