After months of preparation, Monica Peacock is getting set to host "An Evening of Pink -- Memories and Celebrations" at the Civic Centre this evening.

The event is in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and kicks off B reast Cancer Awareness Month locally.

Peacock says she was driven into action after learning last year that a former foster child passed away from Breast cancer. "Marianne was only 34 years old, and her 18-year-old daughter will live with this monster (cancer) for the rest of her life."

Peacock says her "Cook for the Cure" event is the largest to be hosted, so far, in Canada. On a small scale, the idea is that guests to a dinner party will bring a donation, rather than flowers or wine.

While The Brick employee and part-time bartender at the Civic Centre admits she fell short of her goal of 1,000 guests this evening, she says "I have worked my butt off." Peacock is hoping the number will reach 500 by the time cocktails start at 6:30 tonight. Tickets are $45.00 per person and there will be a donation envelope at every place seating. Television news anchor, Pamela Martin, is the guest speaker.

The first-time fundraiser says, "If everything goes really right and everyone donates $20 or $30 dollars, that's $10,000.00 for the cause."

Peacock says while the Cook for the Cure is meant to get the community excited about raising funds for the cause, her personal goal will is awareness. She says, "If one 18-year-old woman, or one 28-year-old takes the time to perform a b reast self-exam, I will have made a difference."

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, it's estimated 21,600 Canadian women will be diagnosed with b reast cancer this year and approximately 5,300 will die of the disease.
