The president of the B.C. Government and Services Employee Union has announced he will step down from his post at the union's convention in June.

In making the announcement, George Heyman says, "I've often said that today's leaders have to make room for new leaders if we want our labour movement to stay fresh and relevant to a new generation of working people and our increasingly culturally diverse workforce."

"Both personally and for the BCGEU, this is the right time for me to follow my own advice and make some room for others who have energy, excitement and new ideas to contribute," he adds.

Heyman has been active in the union and the labour movement for more than 30-years.  He was a log scaler and grader with the B.C. Forest Service in northwest B.C., when he was first elected a steward in 1978.  He was first elected  union president since 1999.

I would like to thank George Heyman for his commitment, dedication and sacrifice he has made to serve his members in this capacity for so many years. I commend his decision to also make room for new, fresh and enthusiastic people to take the reins.
Congratulations. Chester
I had the pleasure of meeting him, He is an open, fair and honest person. Congrats to George for his public service!
Retired and pensioned off. I'll bet his pension fund portfolio doesn't have any union companies in it. Those outfits can't make big bucks for their investors.
