UNBC will be one of four BC universities involved in the proposed centre
The B.C. Liberal government has announced it will seek legislative approval for $94.5-million dollars to create a "Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions".
Premier Gordon Campbell says the institute will bring together top scientists, researchers, governments and the private sector to develop innovative climate change adaptation and mitigation solutions.
The institute will be a joint collaboration between the province's four research-intensive universities -- UNBC, the University of Victoria, UBC, and SFU. The collaboration will be led by U-Vic and utilize existing space at that campus.
The government is proposing an initial start-up cost of $4.5-million dollars for the first year and a $90-million dollar endowment fund that will provide approximately $4-million dollars annually.
Environment Minister, Barry Penner, says, "Developing technologies to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions represents not only a challenge, but an economic opportunity."
He adds, "We have at least 18-thousand people working on leading-edge technological solutions in B.C., which we can market to the world."
