The Canadian Press is reporting that Ottawa is going to commit better than $2billion dollars to a five year plan to help some Canadians cope with higher heating costs.
While some of the cash will come in the forme of rebate cheques, (to be mailed to those who already get the Guaranteed Income Supplement or the National Child Benefit tax Supplement) reports say most of the money will be used to make low-income housing more energy efficient.
Finance Minister Ralph Goodale has said legislation is on the way that will help "the most vulnerable in society."
The report also claims the government will monitor energy prices, and impose penalties for those who are found to be price gouging.
