Prince George, B.C. -  A favourite recreational area for city residents has suffered extensive damage as a result of the water surges and ice shifts that have been part of the Nechako River icejam.

The City Parks Department sent an official into Cottonwood Island Park this week to survey the damage done.  But Parks Supervisor, Flavio Viola, says even the survey work was difficult to do, given the extent of flooding.

Viola says the only area safe enough to evaluate was just around the main parking lot.  He says from this initial look-see, the staff member determined all four bridges have been damaged -- one completely wiped out.  An outhouse was also damaged beyond repair and will have to be replaced.

"At this point we do not have an estimate of the [financial] costs of the damage. We haven’t had a chance to look at the entire park yet." says Viola.

He says crews will have to wait until river levels drop before doing a more thorough assessment of the park's trails.

Most benches, viewpoint platforms, tables, map displays and the only outhouse have been in a poor state of repair for many years. It was an embarrassment, to say the least. I have written to the City more than once about this area and I was conveniently ignored. Maybe now the area will be brought up to a respectable standard.
Hey couls this be our Stanley Park?
I am afraid that unless the place is protected, a respectable standard would be to deactivate the park area and let nature take its course.

The next level up from that would see natural pathways, no bridges except at the narrowest spans and built to be removable and stored safely way each winter. Signage, benches, and other fittings the same.
BTW, they have not fixed up the devastation along the river front from the 2007 spring/summer high water which closed off the heritage river trail adjacent to the water.
PG has a potential Stanley Park IMO but its not Cottenwood... Nope not Fort George Park either. I hope the city does fix up the trials at Cottenwood though.
The province coughed up money for Stanley Park so they can't refuse Cottonwood Park now can they Shirley.
