Prince George, B.C. - The design of a new RCMP building for the City of Prince George, could be unveiled within a month.

Project Manager, Tom Madden says the architects are working on the design now. “They have been given all the space requirements, so they are now trying to develop a design that will meet those needs. We hope to have something the public can look at in a month or so.”

Designs of similar facilities in Edmonton and the lower mainland have been looked at to see which features might be incorporated into the new facility.

This week, Prince George, City Council approved borrowing a little over $11 million dollars for the facility. Some of those dollars will go towards construction costs.

The new RCMP building will be built at the corner of 4th and Victoria, on the property which is currently home to a Bingo hall. When the new “Chances” bingo hall opens later this spring, the 4th and Victoria site will be vacant and demolition can begin.

The fancier the building the bigger the utility bill.
It is a damn shame we paid all the extra money back in 1976 (?) in the construction of the existing cop shop on Brunswick St.
It was designed to permit additional floors, I do not remember how many, but floors comes to mind.
I suppose the standards have risen, maybe now they (the Fuzz) have different requirements from their buildings, but it seems to me that a suitable building could have been erected on, and around the existing one. Just wondering....

I think they should have looked at taking over the old car dealership building on the corner of 20th & Victoria, this building already has car bays that some could have been used for bringing the criminals in and the others could have been used to put vehicles into when the RCMP needed to for other purposes such as mechanical inspections from a car accident or a serious MVA, etc....... as well there is plenty of office space, as I am sure they are not going to shut down the Brunswick street location, and it would have cost less in modification costs AND last but not least the VLA neighbourhood could really have benefited from the large RCMP presence it would have created.

IMHO
" Some of those dollars will go towards construction costs."

Those words are music to my ears but what will the final cost be? We are looking at police structures in Edmonton and the lower mainland. What are we building an E Divsion Headquarters? Why are we not looking at cities of comparable size for ideas. But then the cup is half full so lets shoot the works.

Cheers
Damn good idea, an asta sia.
A perfect building for the fuzz, except not fancy and new.

How about a Timmies on the west wing? Sure would save a lot of time and money for the constabulary. Oh yeah, how about a needle exchange office just inside the front door and first door your right? Lotsa ideas.
Good zingers there harb. keepem coming.

Gee metalman had a few run ins with the police have we?
The RCMP are currently working out of a building that is far too small for how large this city has grown. It may have been suitable 20 years ago, but the city and crime has changed alot in that time.
A new, bigger, fancier, hi-tech building means less crime!

;-)
Anastasia has the best idea.

Don't also forget to have the interrogation room complete with non-functioning or non-existent video cameras.
The building they are presently in was designed I beleive to go to 5 Stories. One of their problems is they dont like the cells on the second floor. Another **bitch** is parking. A renovation, and underground parking (or overground) between the jail and the library would have solved all the problems. Cost?? Maybe $8 Million dollars. Cost for the new building will come in, in excess of $25 Million. The property this facility is being built on cost the City $2.75 Million, which isnt included in the Capital Cost because the City owns the property.

This has nothing to do with the RCMP'S needs. It has everthing to do with Capital Projects, City Planning and job security, Contractors, and spending tax dollars.

The old building (30 years old at best) will be renovated or torn down to make way for the infamous PAC Centre. At that point they will solve the parking problem.

This will be the 3rd brand new Police Station built in Prince George in the last 50 years. We should be ashamed of ourselves.
They should be building it bigger! And every 5 or 6 years they should build on! We need more buildings. Gotta keep the contractors (that Palpou despises) working and keep the money flowing. Better to spend tax money on buildings than to fix pot holes, sewers etc. (unless it is contracted out)
The PAC building should be a stand alone brand new building- 15 million will do. Maybe build a parkade next to it.
With all these great ideas, I think I will run for council--- and give me a big raise!
Another big, expensive building to maintain, and of course more staff is needed, and more 'managers' with assistants. Don't believe everything they tell you about energy efficiency either.
Palopu
What is with the comment about contractors? Is it not obvious that contractors exist because there are contracts? Do you think that contractors are putting the arm on the city to build a new fancy building instead of fixing up the old one like any responsible government would do? I think your ideas i.e. parking, and renovation are spot on by the way.
