P.G. Athletes Among Best in Province

Prince George, B.C. - Three Prince George athletes are among the top 99 in the province of B.C.  and have been recognized by Premier Gordon Campbell for the 2008 Premier's Athletic Awards.

Matthew Neumann, Biathlon; Kenny Lally, Boxing; and Jennifer Simm, Freestyle Ski  all of Prince George, are among the  top 99.

Two Fort St. John athletes  also received  recognition, they are Robert Hedges, Basketball - Wheelchair Sports and Jay Morrison, Speed Skating.

The annual Premier's Athletic Awards recognize top female and male athletes in each of the sports and post-secondary institutions participating in the 2006/07 BC Athlete Assistance Program. These awards honour athletes who, through their commitment to hard work and excellence, have left their mark on sport in B.C.  Recipients are nominated by their respective provincial sport organization or post-secondary institution.


Past award recipients include Olympians Diane Cummins (Athletics), Gary Reed (Athletics), Brent Hayden (Swimming), Kristina Richards (Freestyle Skiing), Paralympians Kelly Smith (Wheelchair Athletics) and Paul Gauthier (Boccia), Carey Price (MVP, 2007 IIHF World Junior Ice Hockey Championship) and Kirsten Sweetland (World Junior Triathlon Champion).

A commemorative plaque with each athlete's photograph and list of achievements will be displayed at the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame and Museum for one year.
