Prince George, B.C. -  The president of Ebb Construction, Bruce Nyberg, says you may be looking at your roof with the intention of shoveling the snow, but you can do more harm to that roof and your home by doing just that.

"The trusses that are manufactured today are built for the kind of load of snow that we put on our roofs in PG" says Nyberg who has been building homes in the city for the past 36 years. People, who manufacture trusses like Winton Global, build them to engineered standards to carry the load.

Here is what you can do wrong if you get up on the roof and begin shoveling he says. |"You have got to shovel all areas off equally, if you don’t, you can change the load factor on the roof and that can create problems. Second, when you are shoveling your are walking around on frozen shingles, you may leave a coat of snow on them but you are still putting pressure on those frozen shingles and any roofer will tell you that you can do damage."

What about the old hand framed trusses that we have in the city, homes that were built before there were engineered trusses?  Nyberg says watch for the doors in your home, "If you find that they are difficult to open and are pressed against the floor then you are getting weight on your roof. The headers (Support) for those old style trusses were built into the headers above the doors and the walls. That still doesn’t mean that you have to get up on the roof and shovel, it means you’re getting some weight up there."

Help, my roof is all clear on the south side and in deep snow on the north side, never had
a door problem, do I have do add snow to the
roof to create a balanced load or better have
a sunshade so the snow stays on the south side roof of the house. Lots a luck for your flimsy houses.
