Prince George, B.C. - The City of Prince George,  will  offer an expression of interest to the Village of Whistler for  the construction of a special "Celebration Plaza" for the 2010 Olympics.

In an information package to Council, the Village of Whistler says the "Celebration Plaza"  can be the gateway  to other communities in B.C.  and  can help double tourism in the province by 2015.  While the information indicates  the  expression of interest is non financial in nature, the pamphlet  does  go on to say that while Whistler is providing the land,  there  are no dollars for the $18.3 million dollar "wood structure".  It goes on to say Whistler is now looking for funding partners. The expressions of support will  be used  in efforts to land  dollars from other areas.

"Personally, I think this is great," says Mayor Colin Kinsley," It would  give us an opportunity to showcase our community."

The City has agreed to  write a letter of support to the Village of Whistler.

Reminds me of a picture I saw once of an old steam donkey boiler that blew up. All that was left was the tubes, all bent in a shape just like that 'thing'.
$18 million for a completely out of scale "sculpture" that does nothing but cast a huge shadow on what could be a nice sunny plaza. There is no lookout at the top, not restaurant, not even a "ride" to go up and down.

And they want the rest of the province to pay for it through cities and their municipal taxes.

A gateway to other communities in BC, eh? A sucker born every minute, as they say.

;-)

Let us see how well this works. We might be able to get a few things here paid for in that way. After all, we are the gateway to the north of the province and everyone ought to pay a toll to access points beyond.
Let's invest our pothole money!
PG city council really IS out of control!
What is wrong with these people?
I think Buddy is the mayor.

I thought I'd heard it all until this one came out of left field. Now we are to help pay with our home taxes for an ugly sculpture costing $18 million in Whistler because those millionaires that live there could use our donations as they think our tax dollars they are already spending won't be enough? Must be nice to be rich....
Revolt I say!
I am revolting. So I'm told.
Seriously folks, I think that city council should refocus their "expressions of interest" to start being a little bit more responsive to what really matters to most people in this town. To wit: Cleaner air and fewer potholes for example. Not too grandiose, but that is a sure fire way to get more votes this November.
