Prince George, B.C. - Thieves who cut through a fiber optics cable earlier in the week, cutting internet service to over 13,000 Prince George Shaw Internet customers, were back at it last night.

Residents who live near the old CJCI transmitter say the saw the thieves on their return to the site last night, near Sintich Road.

The thieves were attempting to pull down a transformer which weighed about 200 pounds with a come –along when a resident flashed a light on them and they fled the scene empty handed.

Police were immediately called to the scene.

This person or persons obvioulsy know something about power, because they had shut down the fuses leading to the transformer and had used climbing spikes in order to get up the 9 meter pole in order to hook onto the transformer. They also knew there was copper in that piece of equipment it weighs more then 70 kilograms.

On Tuesday the culprits cut the main fiber optic line running into Prince George used by Shaw. That line, according to residents, is located up the pole about 9 meters. They missed cutting the telus line which would have also caused a major disruption of service to the area although Bell was affected as it uses some of Shaw’s lines.

The thieves caught in the act last night fled the scene and escaped into a nearby gulley. They left behind all of their tools and equipment when they fled the scene and police are seeing if there is any identification on those items.

Probably stolen tools and equipment from a previous robbery due to the fact that these guys probably got arrested for stealing these tools and equipment and were out roaming free on their own recognizance until their next court date.. Betcha. Could happen. Correct me if I am wrong.
Just have to love all these losers out stealing whatever they can get their hands on. So what about the people buying all this stuff?
maybe Hydro could put dummy fusable links to them and feed the power through an alternate source, fry the bastards.
I'm confused....what is the fascination with stealing copper? Please explain this. Copper is not a scarce metal and not valuable. So what's up with that? I don't get it. Please enlighten me. Thank you.
Scrap copper is worth mucho moneo.
I saw a show on TV where a guy was renovating his bathroom. Replacing the old copper lines with new plastic. The contractor gave him 50% off the plumbing work because he let him keep the copper. Crazy!
what kind of $$$$ are we talking about per KG.??? does anyone know??
Google it!
The resident should of took out his rifle and shot those guys instead of shining a flashlight at them
Just so ya know, I don't have a big container of pennies in the corner of my living room.
ok thanks...

According to Jan 24 CBC article, $3.50 a pound.

Wow, it'll take a lot of copper to make it worth their while.

So I assume the cops are investigating the buyers?!
lol!...Harbinger you should be on Yuk Yuks!
Wow, imagine asking the scrap buyer in this city to confirm who he is purchasing this copper from?. Wouldn't that slam the breaks on the underground copper market. Can't imagine too many places in the city that buy copper. Let's tighten things up at the local salvage yard (yards?) Shouldn't be too difficult to identify the thieves coming in to sell copper.

Well, it seems to be a common sense place to start. Doesn't it? Chester
Surrey has salvage yards record who they buy the copper from
As far as i know, we have 2 scrap metal yards. And yea, they ought to keep records of who sells copper to them! And if the coper was 200 pounds as the article states, they would have gotten $500.00...i would say it would be worth it if i were a thief...
False i.d. would be all a lowlife would need to seel his stolen copper products.
Too bad these pukes won't put the same effort into an honest days work as they do trying to steal stuff. The world would be a more productive place.
metalman.
Go after the salvage yards that buy the metal and make them keep accurate and detailed records and actually go out an check on those records.
It SHOULD already be that way!
If these toilet bugs doing the stealing had to prove where they got from,it would be a different story.
Oh wait...I'm sorry...they must have had a bad upbringing, or mummy didn't love them enough..or hey, maybe it was residential schools,or daddy was a drunk...
What a crock!!
