Events Prince George and the ‘Train in PG’ program have been singled out for outstanding achievement in sport tourism. Events Prince George Manager Virginia Sprangers accepted the Sport Tourism Community Legacy award at last night’s BC Tourism Industry Awards Banquet in Vancouver.
“This is an incredible honour that we share with the 80,000 plus people of Prince George, who continually offer unwavering support when it comes to showcasing our great community, and the opportunities that sport creates for Northern BC,” says Sprangers.
The Train in PG program is an aggressive marketing initiative lead by Events Prince George, in partnership with the City of Prince George and the Prince George Spirit of BC Community Committee. The goal is to maximize hosting, training and acclimatization opportunities associated with world competitions leading up to and beyond the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Sprangers says the Train In PG program is all about the people of this community and region. “The partnerships that have been created as a result of the program are the single biggest contributor to the success of Train in PG,” says Sprangers.
Since its development in 2005, the Train PG program has attracted athletes and officials from all over the world, including:
- A visit from Mr. Lan Li, Director of the Government Branch for Winter Sports in China
- Arrival of Olympic Speedskating medalist Li Jiajun
- Hosting National Women’s U20 Soccer Teams from Canada and China
- Chinese and Korean National Men’s Curling Teams
- Hockey Canada’s International Women’s Fall Festival with National Women’s Hockey Teams from Canada and Sweden
- A visit from the President of the World Curling Federation
- Tour and confirmed training dates for the French Ice Hockey Federation
- Canada and US Men’s National Sledge Hockey Teams
Sprangers acknowledges the support of the City of Prince George and Initiatives Prince George in establishing the “Train in PG” program. “I have to recognize Gerry Offet for his vision in creating the Events Prince George portfolio for Initiatives Prince George as a way to boost tourism through sport hosting. Gerry’s vision was shared and supported by Mayor Kinsley and City Council who all continue to be great champions of the Train in PG message.”
