Federal legislation to tackle violent crime became law today at a ceremony attended by Parliamentarians and Governor General Michaëlle Jean.

Measures enacted under this legislation include:
  • increasing the age of consent for sexual activity from 14 to 16 to protect children from adult predators;
  • enforcing tougher bail rules when a gun is used to commit a crime;
  •  imposing mandatory jail time for serious gun crimes;
  • cracking down on drug-impaired driving; and,
  • ensuring that high-risk and dangerous offenders face tougher consequences when they are sentenced and are kept better track of to prevent them from offending again and again.

It's a start,and nice to see!
It's also long overdue, but it still comes down to how our judges choose to deal with it.
Let's hope they won't have a choice except to enforce this legislation!
I will believe it when I see it.
We need to give police a boost when it comes to dealing with gangs. The majority of serious gun crimes are related to gangs and drugs. When you hear statements like "the victim was known to police", you understand the frustration that police officers have when trying to protect us.
Correct me if im wrong but was it in the 70's when the law was an automatic 10 years for any offence committed with a firearm? When this was the first charge that was plea bargined away they thought they would put something new in the books...an automatic 5 years for any offence committed with a firearm...same thing...always the first charge dropped. So...this mandatory jail time is something new?
