This Friday’s “Free For All” posed an interesting question: “Why don’t veterinarians do house calls to euthanize?”

Currently, there are no practices in Prince George that do house calls to euthanize small pets. Murdoch Veterinary Clinic, which is the only clinic in Prince George that specializes in large animals, does ‘field calls’ to euthanize large animals. This includes horses, bovine, llamas, and other farm animals. They do not do house calls to euthanize small animals such as cats or dogs; however, there are exceptions made in special circumstances, such as extremely large dogs.

“We are much better prepared in a clinic to euthanize animals because it’s a sterile environment,” said Kelly-Anne Heinrichs, an Office Manager at a Prince George Veterinary Hospital.

Both All Mobile Veterinary Hospital and Prince George Veterinary Hospital used to make house calls to euthanize, but shortages in Veterinary staff have made the practice difficult.

How times have changed. People just don't have a gun around the house anymore.

Why is a sterile environment needed to euthanise an animal? The animal will be dead afterwards, so it can't get an infection.
I think the truth lies in this statement:

"...but shortages in Veterinary staff have made the practice difficult."
Maybe if ya take the ol' poor doggy down to the Hood and make it bite a druggy, the city will put yer dog down free.
