Lions 11-2 at Winnipeg 4-10.
Just what the doctor ordered….
Following the Lions taking the gas pipe two games ago, many wondered if they could bounce back to dominate as they have been doing for most of the season.
Dominate they haven’t, however other than the destruction/collapse of some key isolated components of their game vs. Saskatchewan, they did come with energy and commitment only to be beaten by a better team on that night.
Time now for the Lions to fly their 5-1 road show to Manitoba to begin rebuilding by taking two from an opponent that has struggled badly this season (3-3 at home), and unless pigs fly have essentially already put themselves out of the post season.
The Peg is less likely to play desperate and more-so like they’re simply seeking at least a small measure of respect after a forgettable season.
This apple is ready to be juiced.
Let’s set the table:
At this point it’s not looking good for Dave Dickenson who last game took a hit to the head in the Sask. game (believed to be a concussion), and so far this past week has only been able to watch and council Buck Pierce from the sidelines. If he’s lost to the Lions for the Wpg. game the
team loses perhaps not only their inspirational leader but his exceptional play so far this season. To date he has a 73.9% pass success for 3452 yds. Buck Pierce who has seen limited action is so far 24 of 37 (64.9%) for 482 yds. and a 19.3 yd average vs. the Bomber’s Kevin Glen’s record of 2782 yards 57.58%.
BC has scored 411 points and allowed 318 vs. the Bombers record of 373 for and 413 against.
In the West vs.West battle, the emerging Sask. Roughriders sit #1 at 5-2, the Lions #2 at 4-2 and the Peg. dead last in the conference losing all their games with division opponents...0 and 7.
The league’s scoring elite will be going head to head in this game. Wpg’s Milt Stegall sits atop the CFL with 12 TD’s vs. BC’s Antonio Warren in second spot with 11.
The kicking game isn’t likely going to be of “clinic” stature this day when futility takes to the field with Duncan O’Mahony 63.4% having scored 131 total points (CFL # 3) vs. Troy Westwood (CFL # 4) not any better at 66.7% and 118 points.
This is a job by the way, critical to winning anything of real value in the final analysis.
And finally QB sacks are a key topic of conversation around this Lions team as they have given up 59 (so far the worst in the league) vs. dumping opposing QB’s 33 times. The Peg. on the other hand have allowed less than half, with only 25 against vs. 31 levelled on
opposing pivots.
These guys need this game more than one can imagine (a decisive victory preferred....something positive to build on), as they finish a tough schedule with one more against the Bombers,
Montreal, Edmonton and host the surging Roughriders for their final tilt of the campaign at BC Place stadium.
The schedule makers must have been tuned into the stars when they orchestrated this match up for the finale’.
If the Leos are unable to get back on track, they could well be watching Big Green in the Grey Cup game from the comfort of their own seats.
This one can be seen this afternoon CBC at 3:00 PM local time.
