Prince George, B.C.- Want to trade in your wood stove  for a more efficient, cleaner burning model?   The  Woodstove exchange program is underway in Prince George, and  has  been given a cash boost by the Ministry of the Environment.

The  City of Prince George has received $33,816 in provincial funds to support its Woodstove Exchange Program.

Specifically , the provincial dollars will help support  wood stove exchange program , which provides discounts on the purchase of any new certified woodstove or insert when trading in an old, smoky woodstove. Thanks to the provincial grant, this year the program will be able to offer the first 70 customers an additional $250 cash rebate on the purchase of any certified, clean-burning appliance when trading in their older models.

Here are some of the financial incentives being offered:

  1. Retail trade-in discount of up to 15% (Retailers.pdf)
    • In-store discount will be received when an old woodburning appliance is upgraded to an EPA certified wood, gas, or pellet stove, insert or furnace.  Proof of upgrade required (e.g. dismantling old stove and bringing in the door to the retailer).
    • The trade-in discount of 15% is split between retailers (7.5%) and suppliers (7.5%). Since the retail prices vary from about $700 to $3000, the trade-in discount will range between $100 and $450.
    • The retail discounts are being offered by participating retailers (see below), the Hearth, Patio, and Barbeque Association (http://www.hpba.org), and the Hearth, Patio, and Barbeque Association of Canada (http://www.hpbacanada.org)
    • The discount applies to new units only (no demos) with a limit of one stove per trade in

  2. $250 Rebate (Participants.pdf)

The 2008 Prince George Woodstove Exchange Program will run to April 30, with a free Burn It Smart community workshop taking place this Saturday , March 8 from 1 - 4 p.m. at the Prince George Civic Centre.

The Provincial Woodstove Exchange Program has an initial goal to exchange 50,000 old woodstoves for newer, fuel-efficient models or other clean heat sources. It is estimated that this will reduce particulate matter air pollution by 3,100 tonnes a year across the province.

Frontier mentality. How can we clean up our environment if we have to use tax dollars to do so. But I guess as long as you still have people using tobaco what hope is there.

Maybe we should give Canfor and Huskey Oil a few bucks to encourage them to cleanup their act. We should in fact be taxing those corporations that are poluting our air space instead of the user with a carbon tax. But then maybe the dollars would dry up to reelect our politicians that support the poluters.
