Don't Blame Aboriginal Population For Bad Crime Stats

For those who would like to lay the blame for the high rate of crime in this city on the aboriginal population, think again, you are dead wrong.

Yes we do have a high aboriginal population, somewhere between 8 and 10% but they are not the people who are responsible for our latest statistics.

While Maclean’s magazine says we are number 4 in the country overall , 5th in motor vehicle crime, aggravated assault #3, break and entry #7, robbery # 8,  and sexual assaults# 6 , we can safely say that in the majority of the cases,  we can blame local home grown types for these crimes.  When I say  home grown, I  am not counting the aboriginal population, rather, every other  type of person who lives on  your block.

But there is more.  The police will tell you there are around 40 criminals who are responsible for the majority of the crime.

The police put it this way, let’s say you have one crook who commits 40 break and entries a year (and that does happen) four people like them will increase your statistics quickly.

Much of the crime the police say comes from a select group within the community.

It was well put by an editorial contributor recently who said the crooks want to have new BMW’s, new homes. and new toys, so they must grow their business. They do that by perhaps getting rid of the guy who operates a similar drug business down the street. They also try to increase their business by getting more people using drugs which results in them creating more B&E’s in order to supply the habit.

It then becomes a vicious circle and that is where we fit. Get rid of a select group within the city and you will see the crime stats drop like a stone.

The bottom line,  any comments  suggesting our high aboriginal population accounts for our crime stats simply do not hold water.

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

'The police will tell you there are around 40 criminals that are responsible for the majority of the crime." If we know where the thorn is, then why the hell don't we yank it out and dispose of it? Our judicial system is failing misserably. Time for ELECTED JUDGES. Only then will the police have a chance to win.
Elected or appointed, the judges must still follow the sentencing guidelines. It is those that need to be changed for repeat offenders. However, I think it is important not to go overboard with vengeance. First time offenders may just need a sharp lesson, then live the rest of their lives crime free. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

Surely a break and enter is as much a violation of someone's home when done by a person of one ethnic group as it is when done by a person from a different ethnic group. The crime is the violation, not the race. There is no ethnic group which is criminal free, is there? I know that mine is not.
Correct ammonra.
Sentencing guidelines ARE the key.
Take the power to interpret our laws away from the judges and force them to administer these laws as they are written, not as THEY think they should be!
We need MORE minimum sentences that cannot be diddled around with by some bleeding heart judge. who just deosn't seem to get it!
Let's face it,not ALL judges are good at what they do, and we need some way to deal with that that doesn't favour the criminal.
I also agree that ELECTED judges would make a major difference.
Because in case nobody noticed other than the police,we ARE losing the war on crime at a faster rate than we have seen in years.
And if much of the crime comes from a "select group" within the community, how come our police can't seem to do anything about that?
Seems somebody is not telling the whole story here.
Andy, don't you think the police would like to do something about it? Ask any one of them and they'll tell you the same thing. They'd love to be able to lock some of these deadbeats up and throw away the key but unfortunately until our laws change, that ain't gonna happen. Sad. Sometimes it seems to get ahead in this world you need to be a criminal. All the help in the world is out there to help these people and so few take advantage, yet the working class stiff who just lost his job has trouble finding another one. God forbid someone who actually wants to work and earn a paycheck and not resort to breaking and entering and robbing stores!
The sentencing guidelines already treat a first offender more leniently. The guidelines need to be toughened up rigorously for repeat offenders who don't seem to get the message. They keep breaking the law and behave in a manner that makes them unfit to live in our society and they must be kept locked up until they
realize that in order to be allowed to live on the outside they most reform.

They have to conform to society, and not the other way around.

Vengeance is not a part of the sentencing equation (it hasn't been for a long time) but correction is.

The cops do nothing about break and enter. They come by have a look shake their head and mark it down as another B&E for the record. Just another druggie that needed some cash by selling someone elses property. Been there done that.

Untill we make a serious effort to reduce drug use and poverty we will continue to have crime in our midst. And as long as we have insurance coverage for the property taken from us we will not be able to reduce that crime in our sociery.

Our governments at all levels have only one obective and that is to drive the economy come hell or high water. And thats were our taxe dollars go so how can we help those less fortunate then ourselves. The have nots will prey on those that have. As long as we do not have the will to help others we will have to contend with crime.

Cheers
I agree Monty, and that's exactly the problem.
It is also what nobody wants to stand up and say!
Maybe if people quit being so damn politically correct about the dirtbags in our society, things might start to change!
Our cops work hard at what they do,but if the courts and the system works against them, they haven't got a hope!
Everyone complains about crime but nobody wants to get tough!
But getting tough is the only thing that will help!
What we have now is the result of this do-good,let's help the bad guy, attitude!
What Andy said. Thank you for agreeing. It's nice to know that there are people out there who believe that politcal correctness has gone WAYYYY to far. We can't even say deadbeat, or junkie now without someone getting offended. Well the last time I checked, if you messed around with just one sheep, what does that make you? Enough said.
So folks, where do we go shopping and get ourselves one of them "hangin' judges?" Inquiring minds wanna know.
The first thing we need is an election so we can let our ELECTED LEADERS know that not everyone thinks they are as wonderful as they would like us to all believe!
Crime IS out of control, inspite of the BS they feed us!
Start listening to those who elected you,get the job done that needs to be done, and to hell with politicial correctness!
Earn your damn money or get out!
I hate to call you out on this one, Ben, but you're just factually wrong:

www.prisonjustice.ca/politics/facts_stats.html

One in five men in jail and three in ten women in jail are aboriginal. However, aboriginal people comprise only three per cent of Canada's population. It's not rascism, it's just the truth.

Instead of hiding a politically-correct head in the sand, we need to address the poverty and social issues which contribute to higher crime rates among aboriginal people.
Would it not be politically correct to include a course in our new aboriginal school which would be called Canadian Criminal Code 101? Complete with essays, true or false and multiple choice questions on tests designed to educate individuals about our laws here in this country? Along with some guidance from their responsible elders I think we can get this First Nations crime problem down to a dull roar.
I agree with arthur. The 40 bad apple theory flies in the face of statistics regarding crime and aboriginals. Also. what is the point of trying to excuse our lame crime record? No one is buying it. We ought to be very concerned about this, I am sure anyone considering moving here will .
