Prince George, B.C. – About 100 people, including staff, students and local politicians attended a noon hour rally at the College of New Caledonia today.
Students signed three letters, one aimed at each of the local MLA’s.
At issue, an effort to stop the cuts of the programs which serve the disabled.

The student union says cutting programs is not the way to go when there is a funding shortage “That is the easy way out” said Student Union Chairperson Valentine Crawford.
The President of the PPWC local which represents the support staff at the college, says the programs for the disabled must be saved as CNC is a community college, which should not be closing the doors to anyone from the community. The union says it isn’t about job cuts rather it was about the cutting of programs that are the heart and soul of the community. There was a call for the Provincial government to provide targeted funding for the programs which serve the disabled.

CNC has yet to receive its funding letter from the government, and is predicting a shortfall of $1.1 million dollars. When the cuts were announced, ( several programs and 25 jobs) the President of the College, John Bowman, said part of the reason for the shortfall is that targeted funding does not cover the costs associated with such funded programs, like student support services and operational costs.
