Prince George, B.C. – About 100 people, including staff, students and local politicians attended a noon hour rally at the College of New Caledonia today.

Students signed three letters, one aimed at each of the local  MLA’s.

At issue,  an effort to stop  the cuts of the  programs which serve the disabled.

The student union says cutting programs is not the way to go when there is a funding shortage “That is the easy way out” said Student Union Chairperson Valentine Crawford.

The President of the PPWC local which represents the support staff at the college, says the programs for the disabled must be saved as CNC is a community college, which should not be closing the doors to anyone from the community.  The union says it isn’t about  job cuts rather it was about the cutting of programs that  are the heart and soul of the community. There was a call for the Provincial government to  provide targeted funding for the  programs which  serve the disabled.

CNC has yet to receive its funding letter from the government, and is predicting a shortfall of $1.1 million dollars.  When the cuts were announced, ( several programs and 25 jobs) the President of the College, John Bowman,  said  part of the reason for the  shortfall is  that targeted  funding does not  cover the costs associated with  such funded programs, like student support services and  operational costs.

The speakers were awesome! My moms in the first photo, and you can see my shirt =P The college is cutting the jobs of those that need them the most! We need to keep these programs and find funding from other sources.
Are you going to post the section that has to do with the disabled?
If it is so, that they are cutting programs for the disabled I would certainly like to sign the petition.
Good luck to the organizers
Now, THIS I will sign!
Good luck all!
So by "other sources" you are condoning a significant hike in tuition (not a measly $20 per month)? Or do your economics classes teach you that is feasible to magically get more programs for less money?
Cut the increased salaries to an increasing administration and leave the programs in tack. The trend is to increase paper pushers and reduce service and programs throughout our society. Hopefully, the MLA's will investigate the high cost of administrative positions at CNC and take necessary corrective action.
How about overpaid teachers taking a pay cut?
By "other sources"i mean the administration...
If they are going to take a paycut, it should be every single CNC employee, not just administration. I work for Canfor and all of us have to take a paycut as of April 1. The pain is being felt by all. It's a sign of the times and we all have to do what we can to help.
Lame, lame, lame....

As a former student from just a few years ago, I do not condone the short sighted attitude of both Unions, particularly the Student Union.
From watching the yap yap yap of ten years ago, then five years ago, I could have almost predicted that this "rally".

Do these bleeding hearts no get the fact that the customer continues to vote with their feet and that the business of education must must react or wither.

By the way, why only 100 attendees. Where are all the graduates from CNC over the past decade.

Working and getting on with life, paying taxes.
