Prince George, B.C. -   Prince George Mayor, Colin Kinsley says he was nervous when the first bid for the Cameron Street bridge project was opened “The first one that was opened was the highest, it was $12.2 million and I went, oh my God, my worst nightmare has come true, but then as they went through, there was the $9.6 million bid and it  is within the budget numbers.”

Staff still have to evaluate the full quality of each bid, so the lowest bid may not get the job.  The staff recommendations will be presented to City Council on March 31st.

Here is how the five bids panned out:

IDL Contractors (Prince George)                                  $9,619,050.00

Forbes Industrial Contractors (Prince George)       $10,170,367.70

Ledcor (Vancouver)                                                       $11,128,794.60

Pennecon Heavy Civil (Vancouver)                             $11,427,554.25

Surespan Construction (Vancouver)                          $12,313,956.00

Mayor Kinsley says the timing issue is now one that has to be dealt with as there will have to be an environmental assessment of the project.  “We have to go through the environmental assessment process as part of the partnership for the funding and I don’t want to turn that away “says Kinsley.

According to the Mayor, all the necessary environmental information was forwarded to the Federal Government when the application was made and he believes the same information can be put forth in the application for Pacific Gateway funds.  The Mayor says timing is very important “If we lose a month its not bad, but I don’t want to lose three months.”  In an effort to speed up the process, Kinsley was meeting with Prince George-Peace River M.P. Jay Hill to see if Hill could help put the request on the fast track.

Maybe they can start next year, once the red tape has been dealt with.
metalman.
I thought the city had the funding and all of the proper permits in order for this project to go ahead right away? Did we not hire a group to do a study on the feasibilty of this project last year?
We need to rush this job so that there will be a photo op for the November election. And dont forget to tell us what the total cost will be. Lets hope it will be more accurate then the traffic counts over the bridge that the Mare has been feedings.

Cheers
It will be an environmental disaster and an ecological one.
how is the bridge going on the same piers going to be an environmental and/or ecological disaster?
The successful bidder has already been announced as being IDL Projects Inc. Their
bid was $9.6 Million. The Citys budget for the bridge was $9.6 Million plus a 20% contingency. What a coincidence.

Nothing new here. Every thing is on track. Contractors get the elevator, and the taxpayers get the shaft.

Have a nice day.
I agree, "What a coincidence" ! They were big players at the time of the ice-jam, (also)
weren't they ?

Makes us wonder... how could they figure
out the right numbers for this bid ???
How could they indeed. A little investigative reporting might be able to find some beetles under the bark.

What the placemnt of the bridge does is:
1. Keeps heavy truck and hazardous goods traveeling through the bowl. Which creates more air pollution in the bowl.
2. Should there be an accident of any kind, such as a collision and a spill, it could creat an ecological disaster.
3. There is a school located just off of Fifth Avenue where the trucks will still be travelling.
4. There has not been environmental approval yet. McMillan Creek is located in close proximity to the bridge and is the only spawning creek in the City.
5. Guess who pay for the upkeep on the roads? The heavy traffic is hard on the infrastructure and we are constantly having to repair the roads.
6. Oil and gas leaks from the trucks.
It goes on and on.
7. There will be a traffic light on Carney as the trucks come off the bridge or up from River Road. More stopping and starting.
A bridge that connects to a ring road that leaves the bowl as a pleasant place to live and work would be a permanent solution and a cost-effective one.
The truckers don't want to be taking tight corners and stopping and starting at traffic lights on the by-pass which isn't really a by-pass all the time.

WHAT ????
PG still needs approvals (and enviro assessment) - are you kidding?????
This seems like the Airport Project - which set a TERIBLE precedence ... go to public tender before you have the money!!!!
SHAMEFUL PRACTICE!!
