Prince George, B.C.-  Prince George Fire investigators have  discovered  the cause of the fire which caused $200 thousand dollars  damage to a  Teichman  Crescent home   on Sunday,March 16th.

Investigators  have determined that due to refinishing work in the bedroom area, combustible items were moved very close to a gas fireplace in the living area.  Radiant heat from the fireplace ignited the combustibles and caused the fire.  The fire is considered accidental.

The Prince George Fire Rescue Service advises all citizens to keep all combustible items well away from any heat sources such as fireplaces, heaters, and woodstoves.  Homeowners are also advised to ensure that any heat sources of this type are turned off or made safe before leaving their home.
The residents were not home at the time of the blaze, they were driving to  Vancouver to catch a flight to sunny spot for  March break.

was this done privately or by a contractor?
Sorry, but; DUH!
metalman.
I guess the renovation wasn't going very well.
My grade 8 high school shop teacher made a statement that has stuck with me for decades (& served me very well) he said
"Accidents are caused they don't just happen".
Apparently it was a little HOTTER in PG, should of stayed home me thinks. But seriously, the details are limited, but perhaps they left something a little bit too close to the fireplace. Shame though, but perhaps everyone can learn something from this. Perhaps they were too excited and overlooked the fact that the unit was left on under thermostatic control. Suggestion: have a checklist for things to turn off when you leave as in this case perhaps. Audit your own premise regularly for fire hazards, we all have extra heaters in the winter. I purchased a Skylink alarm system with an auto-dialer, which wirelessly transmits sensor signals to the alarm system or auto-dialer to alert any pre-programmed numbers of potential issues. Not very expensive for some peace of mind. Skylink also has a 2 way communication alarm system that allows you to interact via phone. Don't let this happen to you!!
Shame on all those putting people down for making a mistake. Heaven help you when you make the next mistake of your own...Or have you all never screwed up before? Nothing worse than 20:20 hindsight!
Nothing worse than 20:20 hindsight!

Except, lack of forethought.
