Prince George, B.C. - April is nearly here, and that means  you can expect to  see Canadian Cancer Society volunteers selling bunches of bright yellow daffodils.

It’s all part of the Society’s annual Daffodil Days promotion heralding April as Daffodil Month – and the beginning of the Canadian Cancer Society’s 2008 fundraising season to support cancer research, prevention and patient support.

The Canadian Cancer Society is appealing to the generosity of Prince George residents to step up and show their support by buying a bunch of daffodils and join the fight against cancer.

About 2 in 5 Canadians will develop cancer at some point in their lives and the Canadian Cancer Society is working hard to fight this growing cancer rate. The good news is that almost 60% of today’s cancer patients will survive the disease.

Purchasing a bunch of daffodils can help push that number higher.

There are over 200 different types of cancer and even more ways that these cancers touch our health and our families. “At least half of all cancers can be prevented,” said Margaret Jones-Bricker, North Region Manager for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The daffodil was adopted by the Society as its corporate symbol some 50 years ago following a fundraiser by Toronto volunteers who raised $1,200 in that first campaign. “For me, daffodils are a sign of spring and the important role of the Canadian Cancer Society,” Jones-Bricker said.

Volunteers will be on location at Wal Mart, Shoppers Wholesale Foods, Princess Auto and the Hart Shopping Centre this week end offering daffodils and the new Bouquet in a Boot for suggested donation amounts.
