Smithers - BC Agriculture and Lands Minister Pat Bell announcement Thrusday that there will be no salmon farms in northern BC has been met with favorable comment by the Friends of Wild Salmon.
Bell
made the announcement following the BC governments passing a
Cabinet Order in Council making the BC coast north of Klemtu off limits to
finfish aquaculture.

We are grateful that the BC government has listened to the thousands of
northerners who spoke out to protect our wild salmon from fish farms, said
FOWS chairperson Gerald Amos. Today’s announcement means there’s a greater
chance we will succeed in protecting wild salmon for future generations.

The
Skeena River
is Canada¹s second largest salmon fishery. A 2006 study by
IBM Business Consulting showed that Skeena
wild salmon generate close to
$110 million annually in direct revenue.

Today’s announcement is not just a win for wild salmon; it’s also a win for
our wild salmon economy which continues to be so important in our region,

Don't read too much into this...
Keep in mind this is B.C.,this is the Liberals under Gordon Campbell, and there is an election coming in the not too distant future.
They had years to do this and didn't.
So why now?
This is nothing more than election posturing for votes, and we are going to see more and more of it.
And the Liberals are banking on us all believing in it!
How well they know us!
They should all be shut down, everywhere, BC and Chile, the lot of them. They are simply too destructive and counter productive. Instead we should be concentrating on keeping the wild runs in good shape which is going poorly at the moment. If the wild runs die out you're going to see many, many other issues suffer as well, such as Bear populations.

Wake up people, our current system of money worship is killing our planet. The evidence is overwhelming at this point that the love of money - just as the Bible points out - is the root of all evil on this planet of ours. Keep worshipping money and we can count on a dead planet in a matter of years.
Won't sell BC rail, won't privatize hydro. Is this another hollow promise. The libs lost all ridings with salmon farms in the last elecction along with the north coast riding. Are they trying to buy, or lie, there way back in these ridings.

Ban log exports and all open pen salmon farms up ALL of the coast. Maybe, a small maybe, that would win my vote.
Excellent

Now everyone stop buying farmed salmon from your grocery stores and fish markets and we can help drive this open net pen industy into oblivion.
