Quesnel, B.C. - Residents of Quesnel may be asked to vote in a referendum along with the civic election come this November.

The Joint Planning Council  has recommended there be a referendum on the project attached to the fall municpal ballot  set for November 15th.

Multi -Centre Task Force Co-Chair Mary Glassford says the referendum would ask residents for approval to borrow $14 million over 20 years to construct a new North Cariboo Multi Centre. The center would host a new 2,000 seat NHL style arena, 450 seat multi use theatre and accompanying event and assembly spaces.

Glassford says the project can only be successful if the community is behind it. The total cost of the project is estimated at $32 million dollars. If the vote is positive, that would provide the leverage needed to approach the federal and provincial government.

Oh wow! A referendum? Wow! The city is doing this democratically by giving the people an actual say in the final decision?

It even has a 450 seat multi use theatre! Isn't that something like a Performing Arts Center?

Hmmm...lucky people!
I think Quesnel learned their lesson maybe when through elaborate funding (leases) the last administration (Steve Wallace) got the new city hall through.

Quesnel needs a multi center bad. So does Williams Lake.... so do many small towns.

Good to see (potentially) the investment happening.
A referendum...and rightly so!
And what the hell good is 450 seats?
How do you make THAT pay?
Thses type of venues only represent a very small faction of the community, but everyone gets to pay for it!
A referendum is the only democratic way to get it done!
Hear, hear! Perhaps we can have one here on the planned new Performing Arts Center for a start? --- Don't hold your breath, here we are simply told what is going to happen!

Congratulations to Quesnel!
We don't need any government. We can referendum ourselves to death. Hooray fer the 51%. Screw the 49%.
Funny how election results are counted: Winner: More than 50% - Loser: Less than 50%. So far that has been the system.

Elections too are like referendums (referenda). Democracy at work. Will of the people. Governments don't always make democratic decisions. Referendums are deathly? No way.
