Victoria, B.C. -   The Electoral Districts Act 2008, has been introduced  by Attorney General Wally Oppal.  While it will preserve rural representation in the 2009 election, there will be6 more electoral districts  in the  urban areas.  This wil increase the number of seats in the legislature  to 85, up from 79.

For Prince George, the shift in electoral districts means a new riding of Bulkley Nechako  will be created, and that means Prince George will lose one MLA.

The bill  adopts most of the recommendations made in the Feb. 14 final report of the Electoral Boundaries Commission, along with the alternate scenario for the North and Cariboo-Thompson regions also contained in
that report. These boundaries were endorsed by the legislative assembly March 13.

So the North had 9-of-79, and now we will have 9-of-85... my math ain't the best, but its something like an 8+% reduction in representation for Northern BC.

I find it interesting that John (TILMA) Rustad will be running in the new riding west of PG. I figure those are pioneer independent types out that way and I'm not sure how well his message of privatizing BC crown forests to large multinationals will sell without the uppity College Heights crowd to buy his storyline and out vote the small towns. I think he has an up hill battle next election.
Agreed Eagleone...Rustad could very well get handed his hat!
No loss there.
The only problem with that is the Liberals attitude that if you don't elect a Liberal, you won't be getting squat!
Politicial blackmail.
Reminds me of the Federal Elections. After Ontario votes the government of Canada is elected - no need for BC to vote. Same goes for povincial elections across Canada. Just the major centers need to be captured.

Makes me wonder why any political party is interested in any of the 9 ridings north of Hope. Whatever sells politically in the Fraser delta will get rammed down our throats up here. For example if polls show the average household in the delta doesn't like the thought of someone in northern BC driving down an old forestry road, well then, we will be told to not drive down old forestry roads anymore.

Not In My Backyard, and BC is the delta's backyard.

Didnt Gordo do a lot of crowing about leaving our area with three mla's?

Cheers
Are two MLAs doing nothing better than 3 MLAs doing nothing?
