Prince George, B.C.  -    The Prince George Airport has awarded the contract for phase two of the runway expansionproject to IDL/Sharp, a joint venture for $16,483,107.70

Phase two involves the placement of the base gravel in the runway extension area, the widening of the runway to 60 meters, the placement of asphalt on the extension and a new coating on the remaining runway.

Other components will include the construction of a refueling/de-icing apron sized for B-747 one of the largest aircraft in the world. The contract also calls for centerline lights, new lighting for runway 15/33 and installation of centerline lights on runway 15/33 and the installation of a new high intensity approach light system for runway 33.

Airport General Manager Stieg Hoeg says the airport expansion, set to open this fall, will allow PGAA to market the airport as the new transpacific technical stop alternative to international air carriers, allowing carriers to refuel enroute from Asia to America.

Now that the asphalt plant is going to be on the airport property, will that product be available to other consumers?

The FGRD will under pressure to pave some roads for some noisy people that kicked the plant out of Pineview area. Everyone likes eggs and asphalt - just can't stand the smell of production.
One of the largest aircraft in the world, the Ilyushin Il-76, landed at PG airport about 10 years ago to deliver a gas turbine for a Westcoast compressor station.

The Ilyushin Il-76 is a monster size aircraft capable of carrying 50 tons. It is 152 ft long and 165 ft wide. When it took off it used about 3,500 feet of runway and was not as noisy as the Boeing 737 we see everyday.
Yama....don't forget that the aircraft wouldn't have been able to take off if still loaded

"able to operate from SHORT and UNPREPARED airstrips"

Was it that plane tht was also here when we had the airshows here for a few years? or was that another large cargo plane?.
I believe you may be right owl, it was at our airshow.
That plane could take a full 40 ton load and full fuel out of PG. But it would not be able to get out to the runway as the taxiways would squish out.

If memory serves, a 747 has landed here also. It was to return the Chineese who were held at the PG Jail after coming to Canada illegaly.
